A MARRIED WOMAN (1964)
Une femme mariée: Suite de fragments d'un film tourné en 1964 en noir et blanc
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard
95 minutes
In French with English subtitles
It\'s bizarre but this is one of the early films by Godard that many people love, which is bold and creative, but which has almost never been screened since it first came out. Part of the reason for this is that it was eclipsed by other Godard films from the same period which starred well-known actors. But it was with this film that Godard started a new ground-breaking phase in his work, where he began to become aware of the sociological implications of modern life and how much advertising influences our everyday existence.
\'Une femme mariée\' records 24 hours in the life of Charlotte, the married woman. She spends the morning with her lover (Robert, a charming actor) and the evening with Pierre, her pilot husband. The film follows her double life, and shows that she is torn between the two men in her life. But instead of making the film into a conventional emotional drama, Godard takes the opportunity to reflect upon how the advertising world is affecting Charlotte\'s opinions and lifestyle in everything from fashion to politics.
Designed with Raoul Coutard\'s black and white cinematography, much of the film is shot with extreme close-ups. This image design is used to both fragment and intermingle existence, especially the body of the main actress with her environment (which is composed of bra advertisements, album covers, fashion photography, etc.). The photography is luminous and is in the style of Richard Avedon.
In the end, this film is an unconventional cinematic portrait of a woman who is at a crossroads in her life. In retrospect many people now see this film as one of the most revolutionary, daring and important in Godard\'s career.
