BAND A PART
BAND OF OUTSIDERS ( 1964)
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard
95 minutes
In French with English subtitles
Described by its creator, Jean-Luc Godard, as \"Alice in Wonderland meets Franz Kafka,\" this 1964 film noir stars Anna Karina as a naive girl who takes up with a couple of would-be bad guys in a disastrous effort to rob her aunt of a fortune. Along the way, the group joins the Godardian tradition of characters who walk a line between reality and invention.
A story of gangsters and love set in 1960s Paris, it\'s source material runs the gamut from the pulp fiction crime novel on which it is based on the American B-films and film noir that inspired its look. The traditional content is mixed with a modernist sense of experimentation and adventure in its form of storytelling.... and the result is an exhilarating cocktail. This is a film which has inspired many....Tarantino named his production company after it (and swiped a scene from it for PULP FICTION) and the band NOUVELLE VAGUE also called one of their albums after it.
This film is clearly suspended in a twilight world...it is filmed in the carefree style of the early New Wave, but one can also sense the shadow of things to come, the turn that Godard\'s cinema will soon take. \"Band of Outsiders\" is playful, wondrous, hilarious, breezy, but at the same time melancholic, and dark in its undertones. Raoul Coutard\'s dynamite photography gives it a stark look, but its playfulness is its most alluring aspect, along with Godard\'s wonderfully appealing, inventive visual language.

SAUVE QUI PEUT (LA VIE) 1980
Also known as SLOW MOTION and EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF
Directed by Jean-Luc Godard
84 minutes
In French with English subtitles
This was Jean-Luc Godard\'s first return film, after a long period of over a decade, when he was being a recluse in his video laboratory doing his wonderful experiments in digital technology. When this film was finally released, the cinema public rejoiced that he was back making features again. This film centers around three characters that are moving in different directions, at completely different junctures. A country girl (Isabelle Huppert) moves to the city to become a prostitute. A city woman (Nathalie Baye) wants to start a new life by moving to the country, and a director (Jacques Dutronc) is despairing the loss of his child and wife, from whom he is separated. There\'sa lot of brilliant aspects to this film....whether it is the performances, or Godard\'s wonderful use of stop-motion photography or his shrewd use of political analysis.
Winner of the Grande Prix de L\'Age d\'Or this is a breathtaking piece of innovative cinema which also works as a sharp commentary on modern life. The script was written together with Luis Bunuel\'s collaborator Jean-Claude Carriere and it also has additional narration by Marguerite Duras.
