Wow, this is certainly one of the craziest films that I have ever seen. I love it for the sheer audacity, for the guts that Argento had to really make it. But in the end its not only amazing that he made it, but that somehow, at least for me, he makes it work. I don't want to try to describe the plot at all in this one, which would be an impossible task for me anyway. Let\'s just say that basically Argento makes three types of film- Horror, thriller and supernatural...and this falls mostly into the supernatural category.
And hey, it stars Jennifer Connelly (the main actress in Requiem for a Dream) in her first starring role- yep, this is how she broke into show business. The soundtrack is as insane as the \"unknown killer\" in the film, and is composed of music by Goblin, Motorhead, Bill Wyman and Iron Maiden! Thematically what is it about? Phenomena is an example of body-horror in Italian cinema which specifically targets adolescent anxieties about newly-awakened sexual desires and the shame that stems from physical deformity. So in other words, this is a film composed around emotional experiences (specifically the point in one\'s life when you change from one person into another) rather than a straight narrative....and indeed the narrative of this film is anything but straight!
A very original film where Argento takes a load of risks....a film which is bizarre and surreal in a lucid dreamlike way, and which is visually absolutely stunning. So if you have an open mind, and are interested in taking an adventure, then this film is for you. It's unlike anything else out there...
One viewer's comment:
Italian horror maestro Dario Argento made his name by turning homicide into modern art with a cinematic flourish, but with Phenomena he takes his stylish mayhem in new directions. The film opens with the dreamy grace of a fairy tale: a young girl wandering the green meadows of Switzerland and discovering a gingerbread house, wherein lives a monster more modern than mythic, who plunges the picture into a lush nightmare. The densely plotted story becomes busy at times but the lyrical cinematography and gorgeous nocturnal imagery--dreamy sleepwalks, nightmarish murders, hideous horrors that emerge in the dark of night--take on a poetic elegance not seen in his previous work, providing the tale with a kind of dream logic.\"
