on Monday, June 29 in Studio K.
The DDG, in collaboration with the NBF, is organizing a thought-provoking discussion evening for the entire film sector on the role and significance of copyright in the digitized society. This event is prompted by the documentary RiP - A Remix Manifesto by Brett Gaylor (Canada, 2008), which won the Dioraphte Audience Award at IDFA last year. This film controversially raises the issue of the sustainability of copyright.
Questions we want to address after watching the film are:
• Is the current system of copyright protection still usable in the digital world?
• Will copyright still pursue its original goal in the future, namely protecting and stimulating creativity?
• What alternative systems exist and how do they work for makers?
• How do independent creators ensure a stronger market position within the current copyright system relative to powerful parties such as distributors and broadcasters?
• Which system (new or old) is the best guarantee for filmmakers to receive compensation for their creative achievements in the digitized world?
• Suppose we can realize new business models; should these be based on the individual exploitation of works or via a collective? And what does this mean for the role of collective rights organizations in the future?
After watching the film, there is an opportunity to enjoy a hot buffet. Following this, there will be a discussion with filmmakers and legal experts, who will engage in a conversation regarding the aforementioned topics. The audience present will be given ample opportunity to participate in the discussion.
At this moment, the following speakers have confirmed:
• Roland Wigman, lawyer at VWS Advocaten and expert in copyright law
• Martijn Arnoldus, Project Leader Creative Economy at Kennisland
• Maarten Treurniet, director and chairman of VEVAM
• Martijn Mewe, General Secretary DDG
A complete list of speakers will follow as soon as possible on the DDG website.
We request a contribution of €10 per person for the buffet, which must be paid on site. Due to purchasing arrangements, we would appreciate it if you could let us know before Tuesday, June 23, if you would like to make use of this.
This evening is organized by the NBF and the DDG and is open to all professional associations in the film sector. It is important to note that the discussion will be based on the film, so it is essential to have seen it before participating in the discussion.
