VLISSINGEN - The short film 'IJskoud' by Lennart Gosman has won the Golden Starfish in the 2014 Filmstarz competition. The story in 'IJskoud' is about an older man named Willem who makes strange choices after the sudden death of his wife.
Saying goodbye is not an option for him. Gosman describes his short film as 'a drama with black humor about an isolated couple in the Zeeland polder.' The jury consisted of filmmakers Eddy Terstal and Menno de Nooijer, actress Noortje Herlaar, and Dick van den Bout, director of Scoop. They praised the convincing composition and the effective use of flashbacks. "The film works with few text scenes, but could have managed with even less dialogue. Moreover, the texts seem informative rather than reinforcing the drama," the jury noted as critical remarks. In contrast, there was appreciation for the convincing stillness in the lonely scenes and for the loving portrayal of the theme of aging alone. "In that light, this film fits very well within the ongoing societal discussion on elderly care," the jury stated.
