Accelerated Living
With the theme 'Accelerated Living', the 20th edition of the Impakt Festival 2009 focuses on changing notions of speed and time. Over the past decades, the revolution in information and communication technologies and increasing globalization have led to a new time dynamic in which speed and connectivity predominate. The tyranny of clock time has given way to a complex fabric of diverse rhythms and cycles, stimulating our interpretation of time like never before. For five days, the Impakt Festival 2009 showcases the search for a new engagement with time.
The program consists of various components:
The 'We are time' exhibition, featuring work and installations by Guido van der Werve, Thomson & Craighead, Jonas Dahlberg, Vadim Fishkin, Guy Sherwin, Julieta Aranda, and Glenn Kaino, is on view at various locations in Utrecht.
The thematic film program includes a selection of recent and historical film and video works in which the relationship between space, movement, technology, and our experience of time takes center stage. Featuring work by Guy Sherwin, Bruce Connor, Gerard Holthuis, and many others.
During a unique conference in collaboration with Utrecht University, a selection of international experts sheds light on the contemporary experience of time and speed.
During the Impakt Online presentation, the artists who worked on the online projects 'It's About Time' and 'The Slow Web' commissioned by Impakt will speak.
Furthermore, the performance program of 'Accelerated Living' consists of four very diverse evenings. Featuring, among others, musical phenomenon Kode9, minimal guru Thomas Brinkmann, rising hyperdub star Cooly G, and a 24-hour version of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. A highlight is the digital opera by German musician Thomas Köner, produced especially for the festival.
The Sunday School is organizing a debate evening on our technological future 'The Singularity': the hypothesis of human redundancy due to the rise of increasingly advanced computers.
In addition to the thematic programs, the Panorama program presents the best film and video works from the international exhibition and festival circuit worldwide. The program includes new work by makers such as Steve Reinke, Oliver Husain, Manuel Saïz, Clorinde Durand, Björn Melhus, Yves Netzhammer, and Erkka Nissinen.
This year, the Panorama program puts Annika Larsson, Jonas Staal and Vincent van Gerven Oei, LOOP from Barcelona, the Cartune Xprez (featuring Hooliganship), and the OK.Video Festival from Jakarta in the spotlight. They are the guests in the Impakt Invites program.
