This is one of the great films of the silent era which has been forgotten about with the passage of time. So almost 90 years after it was made we are happy to bring this film back to the silver screen.
This supernatural film is set on New Year's Eve, when three drunkards evoke the legend of the phantom carriage, which tells that the last person to die in the year, if he is a great sinner, will spend the next year driving the carriage that picks up the souls of the dead. One of the three men, David Holm (played by director Sjostrom himself), dies at the very last stroke of midnight. With magical special effects, Sjostrom evokes a world of ghostly shadows and mysticism.... and crafts a tale of repentance and a love wasted through alcohol. Victor Sjstrm's Krkarlen plunges the viewer into life's lower depths, with grim scenes of alcoholic degradation, family violence and suicidal despair, but the most memorable passages involve the mythic image of Death itself.
This screening will be accompanied with a recorded soundtrack by KTL, who, if you know about modern drone music, is one of the bands lead by the infamous Stephen O'Malley of Sunn 0))). This dense and darkly atmospheric score works wonderfully in updating the film for modern audiences, while at the same time creating a perfectly haunting mood to set the film in.
