In 2008, ZAND was the only Dutch film selected for the 65th edition of the prestigious Venice Film Festival and was also selected as the Dutch entry for the Oscars. During the Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto in June 2009, one of the world's leading short film festivals, ZAND received an honorable mention, and Jack Wouterse also won the Best Actor award. Additionally, ZAND won the Best Dutch Short award at the Go Short International Short Film Festival in Nijmegen.
SAND (21 minutes) tells the harrowing story of a father trying to protect his nine-year-old daughter from abuse. The lead roles are played by Jack Wouterse (including Suzy Q, Met grote blijschap and De Noorderlingen), debutante Veerle Witkop and Margot Ros (including De Vloer op and Celluloid Blues).
Van Ginkel: Millions of children worldwide are mentally or physically abused. Every week, a child in the Netherlands dies as a result of abuse by one of their parents. When I heard this, all my other ideas for a short film suddenly seemed insignificant. I would like to believe that there is a small chance that this film will make a difference. If we reach one of these parents, the film will already be a success in my opinion.
To date, Van Ginkel has worked primarily as a director of various television productions, including the acclaimed series HEERLIJK EERLIJK HEERTJE starring Raoul Heertje. Van Ginkel has since realized his next short film, KUS, in collaboration with Column Film as part of NPS KORT!, and has been selected to develop a screenplay for the feature film OPPERVLAKTE within the De Oversteek project.
