Last October, Doug Fishbone's work 'Hypno Project' was on display at the Impakt Festival 2009 Accelerated Living. In this work, he explored how people under hypnosis react to his work. The video shown to the audience was full of subliminal messages in which viewers received suggestions to behave in a certain way. Their reactions raise many questions about manipulation and conditioning.
In November, Fishbone returns with a brand new performance.
London-based New Yorker Doug Fishbone has made a name for himself in the international art landscape in a relatively short time. His contribution to the contemporary societal debate? Humor. One of his sculptures is a children's toy device converted into a crude joke-telling machine. During a performance in 2004, he filled London's Trafalgar Square with 30,000 bananas. In video work, installations, and performances, he adopts textual strategies from a variety of characters: pseudo-psychiatrists, bad stand-up comedians, self-help tapes, and mobsters. Through undeniably hilarious monologues, Fishbone reflects with these characters on contemporary social, political, and cultural life.
In his performances, the audience is often assigned a slightly uncomfortable position as witnesses to his musings. He uses PowerPoint-style slideshows in his performances, constructed from images from the Google Image Search function. In his universe, this is the ultimate input for surprising fictional and non-fictional discourses on life.
During this Impakt Event, Fishbone will perform an exclusive new show. In it, he takes a satirical look at Western society by comparing it to an ideal vision of life in the Amazon.
After the performance, he engages in a conversation with philosopher Rob van Gerwen about his own work and cinematic influences.
