Since winter seems to have settled in, I thought it would be nice to take a break and screen this summer road film directed by the great Turkish-German director Fatih Akin (GEGEN DIE WAND/HEAD-ON and THE EDGE OF HEAVEN). So next Monday at the Anita we are going to tear open that gray sky overhead and let all the bright blueness take over for one evening....

Once and while we are planning to slowly screen several of these wonderful director's films. This is one of his early films, and was the first one that got him an international reputation. Seemingly inspired by Hollywood screwball comedies from 40s, Akin is able to somehow pull this wonderful reincarnation off by transplanting the setting to Hamburg, Hungary, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Few films these days can achieve the kind of lightness that this film achieves.....the only other filmmaker that I can think of is Emir Kusturica. Part romantic comedy and part road picture, the narrative of this film is full of twists and turns as it takes you on a wild ride across Europe, heading towards Turkey, switching languages as we go. This is a film with great cinematography, a playful scenario, dynamite acting and a general uplifting atmosphere which is absolutely refreshing.
Like I said, this is an early effort by a director who is firmly making his mark in European cinema history, and it should not be missed.
