Carrie S. de Swaan was born in Amsterdam in 1946. After a brief career in science in the early 1970s, she devoted herself to making radio and television programs. From the 1990s onwards, she produced a number of documentary portraits that enjoyed international recognition, including: MUSIC IS MY BREATH, CATHY BERBERIAN (1925-1983) (from 1994), GISELA MAY: EVERY SONG IS A STORY (1998), and BENNO PREMSELA, DESIGNER AND VICTOR (1999).
De Swaan regularly pointed out abuses in the film world. With her characteristic vehemence, she brought unjust issues—especially those involving broadcasters—to the forefront.
