Animanita: Grave of the Fireflies
In the run-up to the second edition of the KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival, we once again have the pleasure of delighting the loyal film lovers of Amsterdam and the surrounding area with two beautiful animated films and accompanying festivities under the banner of Animanita!

In August, we return once again to the birthplace of our festival with Grave of the Fireflies, the beautiful and deeply moving masterpiece by renowned Japanese animator Isao Takahata from Studio Ghibli.

During an American bombing raid on the city of Kobe, 14-year-old Seito and his 4-year-old sister Setsuko become homeless and orphaned. They temporarily move in with a vicious aunt, but soon move to a bomb shelter, after which Seito does his best to find food and shelter for himself and his sister.
Because the film is miles removed from blatant Disney sentimentality, the emotional impact is a true sledgehammer. Rarely have the horrific consequences of war on children's lives been depicted so powerfully as in this film. Kleenex provided!
To avoid sending everyone home with a heavy heart, we will be playing uplifting Japanese pop music after the film, courtesy of DJ Tobias, and we will have live WiiJ footage of the Japanese watercolor techniques.
