Ever wondered who cleans up the mess left by misbehaving demons? The answer to that question is Shiny New World. In the photo from the film above, you catch a first glimpse of what the short film of the same name has in store for the viewer.

The horror comedy Shiny New World will have its world premiere in July at the 25th edition of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea. The recently completed short film by director Jan van Gorkum centers on fifty-year-old Barry, a peculiar kind of cleaner: he cleans crime scenes where demons have wreaked havoc. While making a corporate video about his work, a normal workday for Barry spirals out of control in a bloody manner.

The film was written and directed by Jan van Gorkum and produced by the Rotterdam production house Make Way Film, in co-production with Zuiderlicht Film and associate producer Jan Doense.

'Shiny New World is a funny, quirky, and fast-paced horror comedy,' says director Jan van Gorkum, who successfully presented the original film plan – a feature film with the title at the time, The Cleaner – at the Frontières International Co-Production Market in Montreal in 2017. 'We now have a great script for the feature film, and we wanted to make a short film that introduces the world of the feature film, along with the main character and some of the peculiar creatures that exist in this world. The intention was not to make a short version of the feature film, but something special and off-beat. In this case, a cinematic corporate video in which everything goes spectacularly wrong. It is also an ode to horror comedies from the 80s and 90s that I love.'

The short film will be screening on the film festival circuit in the near future, and the team behind the film hopes to attract co-producers and investors for the feature film. 'We have a strong script ready and we are in the starting blocks,' says producer Monique van Kessel. 'It is a project with international potential, made by a team that loves genre films. We can't wait to start making the feature film.'
