19 oct: The House with the Windows That Laugh

Greetings, In the East of amsterdam there are finally a few great places springing up for interesting films and culture. Facing the take over of this city by chain stores and corporate business, its important to support these growing alternative venues. Here are the addresses of 2 magical locations: Delicatessen- Sumatrastraat 32 and Mezrab Oost, Domselaerstraat 120. And this coming Monday we will continue with our anticipation to Halloween with this classic 70s Italian cult film which is more about eeriness and mood (in the sense of Poe) than the modern day fixation on horror as being graphically violent. In other words its more LYNCH and less SAW. - Jeffrey MONDAY OCTOBER 19 THE HOUSE WITH THE WINDOWS THAT LAUGH La casa dalle finestre che ridon (1976) Directed by Pupi Avati 110 minutes In Italian withe English subtitles This is another odd cult gem which is renowned in its home country of Italy, but which has barely ever been screened anywhere else. So as Halloween approaches let's visit this strange and haunting piece of cinema....! Stefano, a young art restorer, arrives in a rural Italian village to help save a fresco of the slaughter of Saint Sebastian which is painted on a rotting church wall. While living temporarily in a house previously owned by the two sisters of the long dead artist, Stefano begins a romance with a beautiful school teacher, Francesca. It turns out that the painter of the St. Sebastian fresco was named Legnani, and the fresco was his last work. As Stefano spends time in the local village he hears stories that Legnani was mentally disturbed, and that while painting he would use people who were close to dying or in agony as his models. This film is like a dream which slowly unfolds, so I wont go into more details about the storyline. The main actor is great, and the supporting cast are thoroughly creepy... from the garrulous dwarf mayor through to the pale beauty who mysteriously hooks up with the hero but who seems to know more than she is letting on. There are some nice touches of unsettling imagery that evoke David Lynch- the snails in the fridge, the blood red car and motorcycle and the house of the laughing windows itself. It also has a Lynchian tone of supernatural weirdness to it. There are crumbling buildings, swamps, and canals enshrouded in fog; demented characters; disappearing corpses; and a secret burial site. This is a slow-burning Gothic mystery, full of atmosphere and creepy moods and is considered a classic in its genre...and once again this will be a very rare screening!
