Wanted and desired (2008)

TUESDAY MAY 12th 20:30 ROMAN POLANSKI: WANTED AND DESIRED (2008) Directed by Marina Zenovich 99 minutes In English This heralded documentary film covers the huge sex scandal that Polanski found himself entangled in while he was in the United States. Polanski was at the height of his fame when suddenly things took a turn. First his wife was brutally murdered by a cult which was supposedly possessed by a guy called Charlie Manson. Then he was charged with pedophilia when he was convicted of unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, 13-year-old Samantha Geimer, whom he plied with champagne and Quaaludes during a photo shoot for Vogue at which no one else was present (at Jack Nicholson\'s villa). The film explains what happened and why Polanski fled America before the trial was concluded and has never returned since. This film, through interviews and archival material reviews this turbulent period of the director\'s life & the chaos that followed. wanna see the trailer? then click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMieQzq1snc + 22:15 REPULSION (1965) Directed by Roman Polanski 105 minutes In English Certainly one of Polanski\'s crowning achievements, REPULSION stars Catherine Deneuve as a chick who has freaked out while living alone in a London flat. Things get very darkly surreal as her sense of reality begins to crumble. Roman Polanski was still a newcomer to the world of cinema when he unleashed this unforgettable exercise in skin-crawling terror. Repulsion was the Polish director\'s first film in English and starred the young Catherine Deneuve who plays a Belgian girl stranded in \'60s London, a shy beauty with no social skills. When her sister leaves their shared flat, Deneuve goes gradually, quietly, completely mad. Her world becomes Polanski\'s nightmarish vision, as the director breaks down the separation between reality and imagination. Very few films cast the kind of eerie spell that this 1965 classic achieves. CINEMA DERIVE OVERTOOM 301 20:30 Membership 4 Euros for the evening

LAW OF DESIRE (La ley del deseo) 1987

MONDAY MAY 11 LAW OF DESIRE (La ley del deseo) 1987 Directed by Pedro Almodovar 102 minutes In Spanish with English subtitles Although he had been churning out films for years, the seventh feature film of Pedro Almodovar (Woman on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown, Volver, Talk to Her) was the film that finally gave him international recognition. All of Almodovar\'s films are full of wild fantasy, but in this film fantasy and real life come together in what is considered to be the most personal (even autobiographical) film of his career. In this film we see the template for many of the themes that he would further develop in his later films, so LAW OF DESIRE was a real turning point in his film making. Pablo is a writer/director of fantastic movies. He gets into the snares of an obsessive admirer (a very young Antonio Banderas in a great performance) who has a fatal attraction and will kill for his love. The film reveals the depth of the character\'s feelings with such subtlety and delicacy that as viewers we find ourselves unable to judge the characters\' actions. In La ley del Deseo, murder and suicide become extreme natural consequences of the character\'s love and suffering. It is a melodrama about love as an overriding need, which raises many questions about the very nature of love and passion. In this film you will already find many of the devices Almodovar uses in his later films, including telephones, drug use (cocaine in particular), dysfunctional families, trans-sexual ambiguity, pedophile priests, and hospitals. And oh yes, it also includes a wonderfully unique version of Jacques Brel\'s \"Ne me quitte pas\".....
