Van 15 juni tot 20 juni 2009 organiseert IDFA de Summer School in Amsterdam. Dit is een zesdaags trainingsprogramma voor beginnende documentaire filmmakers. De Summer School richt zich op vijftien filmmakers die hun filmplan in de scriptontwikkelingsfase verder willen ontwikkelen. Door middel van coaching op maat met 8 internationale documentaire-experts, worden de makers geholpen een belangrijke inhoudelijke stap voorwaarts maken. Beginnende filmmakers kunnen zich aanmelden met een project. In totaal kunnen 2 mensen per project deelnemen aan de Summer School, idealiter de regisseur en een sparring partner.
