Marieke Rodenburg

Director Henriette Pimentel at Beeld en Geluid.

Special screening and conversation with filmmaker Marieke Rodenburg and writer Esther Shaya about archival research and the representation of the progressive educator, champion of women's suffrage, and resistance hero Henriëtte Henriquez Pimentel. As director of the nursery opposite the Hollandsche Schouwburg, she saved countless Jewish children from deportation during the Second World War. Who was this woman? How were the filmmakers able to paint a personal picture of her life before the war with barely available audiovisual archival material of herself? In 2022, Marieke Rodenburg made the documentary *Directrice - Henriëtte Henriquez Pimentel*. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Pimentel becoming director of the crèche on Plantage Middenlaan in Amsterdam. In the years leading up to the war, she put her innovative educational ideas into practice there. Shortly before Pimentel reached retirement age, the Second World War broke out. Henriëtte Pimentel was murdered in Auschwitz on September 17, 1943. The documentary tells Pimentel's life story, from the period before the war to wartime, during which she became a key extra in saving Jewish children. After the screening, Marieke Rodenburg and Esther Shaya will engage in a conversation with researcher Anne Margot van der Baan. They will discuss the (audiovisual) archival research, the representation of historical women such as Pimentel, and the impact of gender bias on historiography. Why, for example, did Pimentel's resistance work become less well known than that of Walter Süskind? There is only one moving image of Pimentel in the nursery. How were the filmmakers able to give a voice to Pimentel through available archives from Beeld & Geluid, among others? And to her innovative ideas regarding education and care for children, inspired by, among others, pedagogue Fröbel and progressive women around her. This includes directors, screenwriters, motion designers, writers, producers, photographers, animators, promoters, models, creative directors, actors, and more. Eager to discuss that new film you just watched? How about pitch a concept for a short film to fellow creatives? Looking for a composer or co-producer for your next feature? Every AIM event has brought together a wide variety of creatives, so you never know who you’re going to meet. WE WANT TO SHOWCASE YOUR WORK! However, please be sure you're going to attend the event if you'd like us to project one of your past projects. Submit your commercial reel, a clip from a short film, a scene from a music video, or any other creative piece, to [email protected] (download links only). We will play video only, no audio (since people will be talking) and please try to keep all submissions between 2-3 minutes. Be sure to add a link/name to your work at the end and send all clips by May 25th. Last but not lease, for all you independent filmmakers out there, we're starting the new AIM Indie Film Crew Database. The goal is to connect independent film producers and directors with local crew from around the Netherlands. This list will grow and evolve, eventually becoming public and part of a larger, growing database. Many thanks to Lab111 who has graciously allowed us to meet in their Kapel room so everyone has a safe, comfortable, and engaging place to network. Eighty people are allowed for our 8th event. If you reserve a ticket and can't make it, please release it so others on the wait list can join. *Please note that photos / videos may be taken at the event and used for promotional purposes exclusively for Assembly in Motion.
