Flamenco star Eduardo Guerrero stars in dance film va

ROTTERDAM – Famous Spanish flamenco dancer Eduardo Guerrero stars in 'Symphony of the Body', a short dance film by Rotterdam documentary filmmaker Monica Ruiz van Hattem. The film is an ode to the body's ability to claim space within Rotterdam's overwhelming architecture. Shooting for the film will take place in May 2019 at Rotterdam Central Station. Documentary filmmaker Monica Ruiz van Hattem is a Rotterdam native with Spanish roots. In 2016, she won the Junior Jury Prize at the Festival Internacional Documental Buenos Aires with her first feature-length documentary, 'Death of Don Quixote'. Her ideas often stem from the need to make something intangible visible. This is also the case with 'Symphony of the Body', in which she aims to give visible form to the influence of urban architecture on the physical experience of space. That need stems from her personal experience: “It is as if the city makes demands on my functioning exclusively. The monumental nature, the industrial materials, and the sleek design of new Rotterdam buildings appeal primarily to aesthetics and logic. They are beautiful but also distant buildings. This detachment unconsciously settles within me. What remains is a functional experience of the city, rather than a physical experience stemming from an inner need.” It is no coincidence that Monica chooses flamenco to tell her story. Besides the fact that flamenco has a deep connection to her Spanish roots, she also presents the annual Flamenco Festival in Rotterdam. In Eduardo Guerrero, Monica found the perfect dancer who can challenge Rotterdam's cultural and architectural conventions. Guerrero himself is an innovator who stretches the boundaries of traditional flamenco dance. He was recently named an 'up-and-coming flamenco god' by de Volkskrant. In the film, together with singer and saxophonist Antonio Lizana, he will take on the challenge of Rotterdam Central Station through dance. The Flamenco Biennial is currently in full swing. On February 10, the Biennial concludes in Rotterdam. Until then, leading flamenco artists are performing in various Dutch cities. Guerrero can be seen on February 2 at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ in Amsterdam, where the world premiere of This is Not Flamenco takes place. As a dancing rhythm box, Guerrero engages in a battle with the rhythms and crazy instruments of Slagwerk Den Haag. The performance is an exclusive creation of the Flamenco Biennial and Slagwerk Den Haag. Especially for those supporting the dance film via crowdfunding, Guerrero and Lizana will give an exclusive performance at Podium Grounds in Rotterdam on May 1, 2019. More information about this exclusive performance and other special rewards can be found on the Symfonie van het Lichaam project page on the crowdfunding platform Voordekunst.
