New children's series about archeology and history
Expedition: history moves with the times
In the autumn of 2018, a new season of the successful TV series 'Expeditie Limburg' will premiere. Just like the first two seasons, which aired on the regional channel L1 in 2009 and 2013, it is (still) the definitive series about the history, archaeology, and cultural heritage of Limburg. But the third season will look very different from the first two. Because history moves with the times.
Expeditie Limburg was conceived in 2008 with the aim of presenting Limburg archaeology to the public in an evocative and contemporary way. The production was in the hands of producer and director Robin Peeters of Mosasaurusfilm and cultural historian Kris Förster of KF inHeritage.
The combination of documentary segments and high-quality dramatized reconstructions proved to be a stroke of genius. Ratings research showed that Expeditie Limburg was one of L1's most-watched programs in 2009, with a total of around 455,000 viewers. The same research also showed that the average age of the viewer was 51 to 55 years.
The extras above indicate the enormous potential of Expeditie Limburg to enthuse and inform the public about history, archaeology, and cultural heritage. However, we now live—a few years later—in a world where the media landscape has changed drastically: traditional TV viewing is declining rapidly, especially among younger generations. People watch primarily online, and preferably via social media channels such as YouTube and Facebook.
Expeditie Limburg therefore wants and needs to respond to this shift. Consequently, the new season of Expeditie Limburg will be distributed via the aforementioned social media channels; targets a broad audience with an emphasis on youth and young people; will consist of short, dynamic episodes of approximately 2-4 minutes, a running time that optimally aligns with the viewing habits of the average social media user; will not be limited by the constraints of a broadcast schedule or season, but will be an annual ongoing series available 24/7; and will finally be hosted by a young presenting duo consisting of successful YouTube Content Creator Benjamin Peeters and archaeologist Donna Dieperink.
Benjamin Peeters is one of the most beloved YouTubers in the Netherlands. In 2017, he landed in third place in the top 10 most-watched videos (4.6 million views), after Arjan Lubach and Enzo Knol. A selection of his videos is included in the collection of the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum. Donna Dieperink is a graduate archaeologist with a specialization in physical anthropology, among other subjects. Her passion lies in communicating archaeology and history to a broad audience—two things that complement each other seamlessly within Expeditie Limburg.
What is also going to change is the geographical scope of the series. While the first two seasons focused entirely on Limburg, this will change starting from season 3. Partly due to collaboration with various partners from outside the Limburg provincial borders, Mosasaurusfilm and KF inHeritage have concluded that the series deserves a national platform (and eventually perhaps even an international one). So there is a good chance that in a few months, alongside Expeditie Limburg, there will also be Expeditie Zuid-Holland, Expeditie Groningen, and so on. Despite this expansion, the series will continue to pay undiminished attention to both grand stories and small, local treasures.
