Ricky Rijneke selected for the Toronto Talent Lab

RICKY RIJNEKE selected for Toronto Talent Lab Filmmaker Ricky Rijneke is the first Dutch woman invited to the prestigious Toronto Talent Lab, an artistic development program taking place during the Toronto International Film Festival from September 10–20. Each year, the Toronto Talent Lab selects only ten new international talents from all continents and ten young Canadian filmmakers. The Lab has appointed 'Governors', prominent film professionals who act as mentors. This year's 'Governors' are director Wim Wenders and American producer Jim Stark. Participants can also meet with renowned filmmakers to discuss their projects and focus on the artistic and substantive aspects of filmmaking. Guest speakers include Stephan Frears, Claire Denis, Christopher Doyle, Jia Zhang-Ke, and Agnieszka Holland. Rijneke is going to Toronto with her new feature film project, The Hunter's Son. With this project, she was also selected for the intensive 8-month Script&Pitch training at Torino FilmLab 2015. The Hunter's Son is produced by Rotterdam Films in co-production with, among others, France. The Hunter's Son is Ricky Rijneke's second feature film project. She made an international name for herself with her first short film, Wing, the fish that talked back, and her award-winning feature film debut, Silent Ones, for which she brought together a host of award-winning European talent. Silent Ones was nominated for the Tiger Award competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. This was followed by a triumphant tour of many international festivals, including Moscow, Sarajevo, Sao Paulo, Montreal, and Rio de Janeiro. The film was nominated a total of twelve times and won eight international awards, including in New York, Toronto, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Talent Lab Governor and producer Jim Stark (including a number of films by Jim Jarmusch) about Silent Ones: “With gorgeous visual imagery and an elliptical but very poetic story, her debut film Silent Ones has earned Ricky Rijneke a place among Europe's best young up and coming directors.” Silent Ones appeared in Dutch cinemas in December 2014 and was unanimously praised by the national press. Het Volkskrant 2014 Year in Review included Silent Ones in the list of 'Best Dutch Films': “a dreamscape that is unprecedented in Dutch Cinema”.

Animation and interaction in documentary

Vooraf aanmelden is verplicht.

Filmpeople improves user-friendliness

Filmpeople, the online platform for Dutch filmmakers, has refreshed the interface for its users and is working on improving communication with members and account holders. The organization has been maintaining platforms such as Filmvacatures.nl, Filmindustry.nl, Filmstart, and Filmnieuws.nu for years. The number of users is steadily increasing. Consequently, many structural technical adjustments have been implemented on the Filmpeople platforms over the past two years. The software on which the websites run was well prepared for the future, but as a result, much of the work took place behind the scenes. Significant improvements are now also visible on the outside. Fedor Limperg, one of the founders of Filmpeople: “Letting the programmers do their thing is enormously important, because without that, nothing is possible. But we have now reached the point where we can also tackle the visible aspects. We recently created clearer icons in the dashboard and rewrote accompanying texts and explanations. It is very simple, but it makes the platform a lot more user-friendly.” In the process, the helpdesk was also streamlined, an extensive archive of 'frequently asked questions' was compiled, and information about Filmpeople and the ideals behind the network is now available online. “During an email survey, we discovered that many filmmakers enjoy using our services and websites, but are not always aware of the full range of possibilities.” The organization aims to better communicate what Filmpeople offers as a network for people working in the Dutch film industry. The improvements to the network's websites are partly driven by the growing membership base; the number of paying members more than doubled last year, from 700 to 1,500. Limperg explains: “Thanks to this strong growth, we can now further develop the networking functions of our sites. And that is great, because our heart lies with the creative maker, and we want to facilitate and make easier the creation of beautiful, distinctive films. We want to connect filmmakers with each other as much as possible, so that they can creatively cross-pollinate each other.” For more information about Filmpeople, you can visit: http://www.filmpeople.nl/paginas/view/150
