On Monday, April 20 at 7:30 PM, there will be a one-time screening of the documentary Sluizer Speaks in the presence of director Dennis Alink. Afterwards, he will answer questions from the audience. On September 20 of this year, the internationally active Dutch filmmaker George Sluizer passed away. This time, however, he did not rise from the dead; following an earlier arterial hemorrhage, he was wrongly declared dead and “almost pushed into the fridge.” A typical Sluizer statement, as becomes clear from this outspoken portrait, in which the idiosyncratic artist looks back on his richly filled life, his sources of inspiration, great loves, legendary encounters with the greats of the world, and his films: the common thread running through his existence. The life story that Sluizer recounts in his own words—occasionally put to the test by director Dennis Alink—is supported by excerpts from his work and the shooting of his latest triumphant tour of film festivals with Dark Blood.

The Amsterdam Film School opens its doors on Thursday, April 16, for the first open evening of 2015. During this evening, you will learn more about the revamped evening program and the one-week film school, which will take place for the first time during the May holidays. Walk-ins at Herengracht 425 are at 19:00; there is an introduction at 19:30, and at 20:00 a free Light & Camera workshop by cameraman Ruurd M. Fenenga begins. Ruurd M. Fenenga comes from a film family. His father – cinematographer, producer, and director – was his first mentor. At the age of 21, he went to Los Angeles on a whim, where he soon began working as a first assistant cinematographer. He worked on the TV series “Twin Peaks,” among others. He also made music videos with Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, and MC Hammer (“U Can't Touch This”). As a first assistant cinematographer, he has worked with Stuart Dryburgh, ASC, NZCS (“Boardwalk Empire”), Jim Weisiger, VF (“Titanic”), and on more than 35 feature films.

The award-winning drama film was created by the Viennese improvisational theater group English Lovers and tells the story of five old, estranged school friends who are reunited after 20 years during a weekend at a remote and mysterious country house. In the course of their happy, though somewhat awkward, reunion, they slowly discover how each of them is trapped in a life that pales in comparison to the life they had envisioned for themselves—and for each other. Before the weekend is over, everyone will have to learn that sometimes you have to close one door before another opens. The film was created without a script, making use solely of the unique storytelling experience of the English Lovers.
