INTERNATIONAL FILM FINANCE WORKSHOP
at Amsterdam Film School, weekend January 31 & February 1
On 31 January and 1 February there will be an interactive workshop on international film financing at the Amsterdam Film School. Participants will have the opportunity to bring in their own projects, with renowned producer Paul Miller providing feedback.
Paul Miller is an independent producer who works in the United States, Europe and the Middle East. Miller was Director of Film Financing at the Doha Film Institute, where he oversaw a €20 million financing fund. He is a producer of films such as 'A Love Song For Bobby Long' starring John Travolta and Scarlett Johansson; 'Prozac Nation' starring Chistina Ricci, Jessica Lange and Anne Heche; 'The Secret of Roan Inish', the Oscar-nominated 'Lone Star' and the Golden Globe-nominated 'Men with Guns'. His films were released by Warner and Miramax. Miller is a consultant to ACE (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen) and a member of both the Director's Guild of America and the Producer's Guild of America.
The International Film Financing Workshop looks at the role of a creative producer in the entire process of development, financing and delivery. This at a time when production and distribution are undergoing major changes and finding your audience is more important than ever.
Participants are expected to bring in an unproduced project. This doesn't have to be a project the filmmaker is actively working on; an idea that he is willing to share with the other participants is sufficient. Preferably already worked out into a first draft scenario or at least into a treatment, where the participant is expected to already have an idea about the director, protagonists, locations and the amount of the budget. Incidentally, scripts are not shared with the other participants.
Topics covered include: logline; the elevator pitch; assembling the creative team; the choice of a director; partnerships; development budget; copyright and chain of title; packaging and agents; recording casting and cast; contracts with actors; profit expectations; box office comparables; equity, pre-sales, gap financing, loans and soft money; the business plan; return on investment; 'the waterfall'; what do you offer the financiers?; marketing and distribution plan; audience demographics and social media.
The workshop costs €499.
