Craft in Image festival 17 to 19 May in Zaandam

From Friday, May 17 to Sunday, May 19, 2013, the Windy Miller Foundation is organizing the Ambacht in Beeld festival at film theater De Fabriek in Zaandam. The focus is on the human being as a maker—artisanal craftsmanship—captured in beautiful documentaries. The festival focuses on craftsmanship from diverse perspectives and from various eras and countries, from Russia to the Zaan region. For instance, documentaries on French fashion (Hearts and Crafts, The people that make Hermès), Russian animation (Magia Russica), Japanese ceramics (The Successor of Kakiemon), Zaan timber construction (De Huisman), and the restoration of musical instruments (Talking Guitars) can be seen, showcasing the valuable and indispensable expertise of artisans. In addition to the screening of remarkable documentaries, (inter)national speakers, such as American sociologist and photographer Douglas Harper, designer Maaike Roozenburg, master guitar maker Flip Scipio, and Rijksmuseum curator Femke Diercks, will give lectures on their work and research. There are also workshops and demonstrations by real artisans for young and old in the hall and café of De Fabriek, including a goldsmith, an animation artist, and sushi masters. On Tuesday, May 14, as part of the Ambacht in Beeld festival, there will be an in-depth Cineblend discussion evening at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam on the role of film in the preservation and transmission of intangible cultural heritage, which also includes artisanal skills. With this festival, the Windy Miller Foundation hopes to introduce a broad audience to various traditional and contemporary crafts, and to increase appreciation for this important part of our cultural heritage that is increasingly in danger of disappearing.
