George Sluizer adapted Tim Krabbé's *Het Gouden Ei* into a film starring Johanna ter Steege and Gene Bervoets, and gained his international fame with it. George Sluizer He began in the 1960s as Bert Haanstra's assistant and is internationally one of the best-known Dutch directors. He is known for 10 titles, the most famous of which are Spoorloos (1988), The Vanishing (1992), Twee Vrouwen (1979), João en het Mes (1972), and Dark Blood (1993–2012). During the filming of the latter, River Phoenix (the lead actor along with Jonathan Pryce and Judy Davis) died, resulting in the footage remaining untouched for 19 years. Johanna ter Steege In 1987, Ter Steege was asked to play a role in the film Spoorloos. For this, she received the European Film Award for Best Supporting Actress. Since then, she has traveled all over the world, acted in various languages, and worked with famous directors such as Robert Altman (Vincent & Theo), István Szabó (Sweet Emma, Dear Bobe), Heddy Honigmann (Tot Ziens/Goodbye, Best Actress in Locarno), and Bruce Beresford (Paradise Road). Ter Steege has worked with actors such as Glenn Close, Frances McDormand, Isabella Rossellini, Gary Oldman, Tim Roth, and Klaus Maria Brandauer. Stanley Kubrick considered Johanna ter Steege the best actress in the world when he cast her in the film Aryan Papers. He chose her over Julia Roberts, who had been put forward by the studios. Incidentally, the film was never made because the subject matter—the Holocaust—made Kubrick too depressed. Furthermore, Spielberg's Schindler's List had just been released, and Kubrick did not dare to take on the adventure. De Balie is organizing the screening of Spoorloos in support of the crowdfunding campaign for the documentary Sluizer Speaks. http://www.cinecrowd.nl/sluizer-speaks Tickets are available at the door at De Balie or via the website: http://debalie.nl/artikel.jsp?articleid=475776 Your contribution and presence are greatly appreciated. Masterclass 'Sound in Film' by Michel Schöpping

Date: April 21, from 14:00 to 18:00. Location: Lumiere Cinema Maastricht. Price: combi ticket (seminar + film): €15.00. Film only: €8.50. Cinesud and Made in Europe cordially invite you to the seminar 'Sound in Film: The Meaning of Sound' by internationally recognized composer, sound designer, and mixer Michel Schïpping. Michel is known for his work on films such as *De Helaasheid der Dingen*, *Altiplano*, and *The Broken Circle Breakdown*. Following his two-hour seminar, his latest film *Kid* (directed by Fien Troch) will be screened exclusively. The program concludes with the traditional networking reception. The masterclass (start: 2:00 PM) During the seminar, Michel will use excerpts from both his own and external work to discuss the significance of sound as an invisible communicator of emotions. Naturally, sound will also be addressed as a (co-)determinant of space and time, and the relationship between the two. In the visual culture in which we live today, sound can still play an important role—and perhaps even more so. Precisely because of the dominance of the image, an enormous unnoticed space is created for the sound construction of an audiovisual product. What expressive scope is there for using sound without the audience noticing? How is sound able to allow continuity and discontinuity to be experienced largely independently of the image? These and many more questions are addressed during the seminar. The elements by which the soundscape is created, such as diegetic and non-diegetic sound and music, are also discussed. Thanks to the variety of (example) clips shown and Michel's extensive theoretical and practical knowledge, the seminar provides a clear and distinct picture of the role, function, and significance of sound in film. Kid (start: 16:30) The Flemish film Kid tells the story of the cheerful Kid, his brother Billy, and their mother, who live together on a farm. With limited resources, Mama tries to create a warm, loving home. However, fate strikes when she is murdered. Young Kid and Billy are now on their own in their search for a little happiness. Kid is Fien Troch's third feature film. She previously made Een ander zijn Geluk (2005) and Unspoken (2008). Registration required via [email protected].
