Masterclass 'Sound in Film' by Michel Schöpping

Date: April 21, from 14:00 to 18:00. Location: Lumiere Cinema Maastricht. Price: combi ticket (seminar + film): €15.00. Film only: €8.50. Cinesud and Made in Europe cordially invite you to the seminar 'Sound in Film: The Meaning of Sound' by internationally recognized composer, sound designer, and mixer Michel Schïpping. Michel is known for his work on films such as *De Helaasheid der Dingen*, *Altiplano*, and *The Broken Circle Breakdown*. Following his two-hour seminar, his latest film *Kid* (directed by Fien Troch) will be screened exclusively. The program concludes with the traditional networking reception. The masterclass (start: 2:00 PM) During the seminar, Michel will use excerpts from both his own and external work to discuss the significance of sound as an invisible communicator of emotions. Naturally, sound will also be addressed as a (co-)determinant of space and time, and the relationship between the two. In the visual culture in which we live today, sound can still play an important role—and perhaps even more so. Precisely because of the dominance of the image, an enormous unnoticed space is created for the sound construction of an audiovisual product. What expressive scope is there for using sound without the audience noticing? How is sound able to allow continuity and discontinuity to be experienced largely independently of the image? These and many more questions are addressed during the seminar. The elements by which the soundscape is created, such as diegetic and non-diegetic sound and music, are also discussed. Thanks to the variety of (example) clips shown and Michel's extensive theoretical and practical knowledge, the seminar provides a clear and distinct picture of the role, function, and significance of sound in film. Kid (start: 16:30) The Flemish film Kid tells the story of the cheerful Kid, his brother Billy, and their mother, who live together on a farm. With limited resources, Mama tries to create a warm, loving home. However, fate strikes when she is murdered. Young Kid and Billy are now on their own in their search for a little happiness. Kid is Fien Troch's third feature film. She previously made Een ander zijn Geluk (2005) and Unspoken (2008). Registration required via [email protected].

Professional training videotop

Are you already active in the audiovisual sector and do you want to further professionalize your skills or do you want to broaden your skills by adding another specialization, then the Vocational Training Videotop is something for you. The Videotop is a tough course for people who have a strong ambition to progress in the film profession, in which you produce a large number of films as a professional team with your fellow students. In addition to technology, this program pays a lot of attention to the content and design of audiovisual productions. The theoretical deepening is extensive, but the nature of the training is mainly practice-oriented. Under expert guidance, you learn to tell cinematic stories in combination with intensive training in the use of camera, light, sound and editing equipment. In addition, production, art direction and game direction are discussed. The basic idea of this training is: You learn filmmaking by making films. During the course you will take classes in every discipline of the film profession, after which you will immediately use your acquired knowledge to make productions. As a full-fledged crew, we make commercials, corporate films, video clips, documentaries and fiction films. The amount of productions depends on the number of participants, but you make a minimum of 8 plus the final productions. The crews rotate with each production, so that you are always responsible for a different department. You will be coached during "turning", so that you learn quickly and effectively.
