For anyone who missed the afternoon Rietveld screening of the great film over Bas Jan Ader, I am screening it one more time this coming Sunday evening, and combining it with another absolutely brilliant film. What can I say except these are two of the most fascinating documentaries that I have seen in a long time...
Warning: We will try to start on time, otherwise it gets to be too late for people to see both films, and both films are sooooo important...!

DEEP WATER tells the story of Donald Crowhurst, who entered the first Sunday Times Golden Globe solo, non-stop, round-the-world, boat race in 1968. His boat began its journey slowly but, as the race progressed, reports of his position at sea showed that electronics inventor Crowhurst was covering great distances every day. The news made headlines across the world but as the world waited for Crowhurst to cross the finishing line, the shocking truth was revealed. DEEP WATER includes interviews with Donald Crowhurst’s family and is narrated by actress Tilda Swinton.
This is a haunting documentary, about sailing into oblivion, which is the kind of film that you will remember for the rest of your life. That is a promise.

HERE IS ALWAYS SOMEWHERE ELSE is an acclaimed documentary film by Rene Daalden which pieces together the brief life of the enigmatic Dutch artist (and ex-Rietveld student) Bas Jan Ader who was last seen in 1975 when he took off in what would have been the smallest sailboat ever to cross the Atlantic. In his final performance In Search of the Miraculous Ader attempted to cross from Massachusetts to Ireland, but only his empty vessel reached the Irish coast eight months later. For an artist whose films, photos, and performances were often framed around profound failure—images of the artist falling, colliding, crying—this final gesture seemed prophetic, but continues to be a mystery for even those closest to him. A wonderful, rarely screened documentary!
