BECOMING INTENSE THURSDAY NOVEMBER 19 16:30 MS.45 - ANGEL OF VENGEANCE (1981) Directed by Abel Ferrara 80 minutes In English Abel Ferrara's first big splash in independent filmmaking, this film stars the cult actress/model/writer Zo Lund as a young, beautiful New York City woman who is intensely shy and unable to speak. Her naive beauty provokes the aggressive attention of many of the men who meet her. One day while walking home, she is assaulted at gunpoint and brutally attacked by two thugs. Her enormous fears, which had driven her inward before, now push her to an outward course of action. After killing one of her assailants, she discovers a .45 automatic, which she she starts carrying with her on the streets...initially for protection, but ultimately for unrelenting revenge against all males. Zo Lund makes the most of her wordless role, her wide-eyed vulnerability hardening to a dead-eyed determination as she transforms from quivering victim to avenging dark angel, a one-woman vigilante force hunting pimps, perverts, and sickos, and using herself as bait. Many of the images are striking and unforgettable, such as the main character dressed for Halloween in a nun's outfit with voluptuous red lipstick on her lips and with a gun tucked in her garter belt....creating a mood of heaven and hell as she prepares to clean the streets of any man she happens to come across. Despite what this storyline sounds like, this is a subtle, beautiful, convulsive film about death and transfiguration. This film is extremely difficult to get in its uncensored version, and is never screened in cinemas anyway, so this is a special showing of this legendary cult film....in the uncut version of course! After this magnificent collaboration between Abel Ferrara and Zo Lund they next worked together on the notorious Bad Lieutenant. The life of the amazing Zo Lund is an example of marginalized creativity and thoughtful courage And, in the end, whose life is an example of multiple "becomings" if not hers? For what is Noe's picture but a French version of this dark classic? Another cutting-edge film staring LUNG LEG and LYDIA LUNCH.....a film which fits all too well into the theme of "becoming intense". Cineblend, de maandelijkse avond van SAVAN (Stichting Audiovisuele Antropologie Nederland) met diner, film en debat, heeft woensdag 2 december als thema: Chinese jongeren: een verborgen minderheid in Nederland? De avond wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met het Chinese Politieke Integratie & Participatie Fonds en de Blue Water Dragon Foundation. Chinees voelt zich gediscrimineerd, kopte de gratis ochtendkrant Spits groot op 15 september 2009. Het hoofdartikel publiceerde een aantal conclusies uit de afstudeerscriptie van cultureel antropologe Lilly Witte (23). Een van die conclusies was, dat Chinese jongeren, hoewel vaak aangehaald als modelgroep van volledige integratie, zelf ervaren dat ze in de beeldvorming van de autochtone bevolking als Chinees en dus niet-Nederlands worden gestigmatiseerd. De tweede, derde en vierde generatie Nederlandse Chinezen zijn succesvol, spreken vloeiend Nederlands en zien Nederland als hun thuis. Maar zij voelen zich ook vaak tussen de wal en het schip vallen, tussen de Chinese en de Nederlandse maatschappij. Op deze avond bekijken we, aan de hand van enkele filmfragmenten, wat de beeldvorming over de Chinese minderheid behelst, hoe Chinese jongeren dit ervaren en hoe zij omgaan met de verschillende culturele rolpatronen in de Nederlandse en Chinese samenleving. Te gast zijn: Lilly Witte, antropologe. Haar afstudeerscriptie over de beeldvorming over de Chinese minderheid in Nederland en de etnische identificaties van de tweede generatie Nederlandse Chinezen deed veel stof opwaaien. Naar aanleiding van Wittes scriptie wordt er heftig gediscussieerd door Chinese jongeren op verscheidene internetfora. Karina Meeuwse, schrijfster en documentairemaakster. Auteur van het bijzonder goed ontvangen (ook en vooral binnen de Chinese gemeenschap) boek 'Het huis van Han, dat in 2010 in herdruk verschijnt met actuele update, en maakster van de documentaire Oostenwind (2000), beide handelend over de geschiedenis van de Chinezen in Nederland. Meeuwse rekent af met het vooroordeel dat de Chinese gemeenschap een gesloten bastion is. Aaron Wan, acteur, zanger en scenarioschrijver. Geboren in Hong Kong. Speelde een hoofdrol in de bekroonde jeugdfilm Het Paard van Sinterklaas van Mischa Kamp, alsmede in het vervolg Waar is het Paard van Sinterklaas?, met als onderwerp een Chinees meisje in Nederland. De discussie wordt geleid door Mariska Stevens, antropologe, directeur van de stichting Blue Water Dragon Foundation (wetenschappelijke en educatieve uitwisseling met China).
