Fedor Sendak

screening: Roman Polanski & Jaromil Jires

Tuesday July 7 20:30 CUL-DE-SAC (1966) Directed by Roman Polanski 113 minutes In English From Polanski\'s early period we have this extremely surreal black comedy which is about a mismatched married couple, George and and his adulterous, nymphomaniac young French wife Teresa (Donald Pleasence and Francoise Dorleac), who are living in an 11th-century castle on an isolated island off the coast of England. One day their home is invaded by two gangsters on the run after an unsuccessful heist. The main gangster is Dicky, a thug who attempts to save the life of his wounded partner by enlisting the help of George and Teresa, and then holds them captive in their own home as the gangsters await the arrival of their underworld boss the mysterious Mr. Kattlebach. This film remains one of the strangest in Polanski\'d career, with a very sharp but oddball sense of humor, great B&W cinematography, and a brilliant collection of actors to play out this warped tale. Cul-de-sac is a bizarre film indeed. In his autobiography, Polanski stated that this was his favorite film of all, and, if he had the choice, he\'d only do movies like this. + 22:30 VALARIE AND HER WEEK OF WONDERS (Valerie a tyden divu) 1970 Directed by Jaromil Jires 73 minutes In Czech with English subtitles This dreamlike story captures the coming-of-age of a young Czechoslovakian girl. After receiving a pair of earrings, Valerie starts to experience confusing dreams of fear, hope, and anticipation. As her burgeoning sexuality sparks even more haunting escapades, Valerie must contend with an explosive world that challenges and inspires her....an adventure that involves vampirism, incest, treachery, soul-robbing and sensual eroticism. A surreal tale in which love, fear, sex and religion mingle into one hallucinogenic world in the mind of an adolescent girl. But I must also say that the story is actually in second place to the ethereal but ravishing cinematography which is the real essence of the film. \'\'Valerie crystallizes a sense of the mystical, the ethereal and captures it to celluloid\'\'.
