we screen 2 films from 'wild' 70s Japanese cinema
Next Tuesday at the OT 301 we will be screening two films from that wild period in Japanese cinema- the 70s, when anything seemed possible. The first film is the infamous art-house sensation about explosive erotic passion. The second, for those who want to stay and take a further walk on the wild side, is a real gem of transgression which has hardly ever been screened here in the west. I have to warn you, you really have to keep an open mind for this one.
Hope to see you Tuesday at the cinema....!

TUESDAY JUNE 9
20:30
IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES (Ai no corrida) 1976
Directed by Nagisa Oshima
102 minutes
In Japanese with English subtitles
The internationally acclaimed transgressive art house blockbuster which dared to investigate the nature of passion, and also ask: what is the result when love has no borders?
Nagisa Oshima\'s sensational, 1976 film tells the true story of a woman (Eiko Matsuda) whose obsessive sex drive with her lover (Tatsuya Fuji) crosses the line from passion into the territory of life and death. One of the most sexually explicit films ever to play in mainstream theaters (though it was censored in the U.S. and Japan), it has an air of highly-charged erotic doom, suggesting that sex can be a doorway to death. With this wild and deeply disturbing film director Oshima (Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence) plummets the mysteries of our very existence.
In the Realm of the Senses (Ai no corrida) still remains one of the most controversial films of all time. A graphic portrayal of insatiable sexual desire, set in 1936 it depicts a man and a woman consumed by a transcendent, destructive love while living in an era of ever escalating imperialism and governmental control. In the Realm of the Senses is a brave, taboo-breaking milestone. And of course we will be screening the complete uncensored version.

WIFE TO BE SACRIFICED (IKENIE FUJIN) 1974
Directed by Masaru Konuma
71 minutes
In Japanese with English subtitles
A man kidnaps his ex-wife (the gorgeous Naomi Tani) and subjects her to various forms of humiliation and abuse. She finally stops resisting and embraces her submission. Not politically correct at all, films like this create a vision of hell for some, a vision of heaven for others. This is highly erotic and simple in its execution, but complex for its sexual politics.
This film is artistically well made, with great acting and cinematography..... the sexual anarchy on screen is strangely beautiful and the film\'s general tone is deliciously subversive. \"Wife to Be Sacrificed\" is considered a cult classic and remains one of the most famous Japanese S&M pink films.
