British/Ghanaian filmmaker and activist John Akomfrah, winner of the 2012 Princess Margriet Award, is at De Balie on Sunday. He speaks with Abdelkader Benali and screens his film Mnemosyne. John Akomfrah is widely regarded as the founder of modern Black British Cinema. He co-founded the Black Audio Film Collective in the 1980s. He is currently a director of Smoking Dogs Films and Creation Rebel Films. He received an OBE in 2008 for his contributions to the film industry. He is working on various projects, including a trilogy on migration linked to the history of European art. In Mnemosyne, he draws a parallel between modern migration and the classic story of Odysseus. He drew material from over twenty years of BBC archives and combined it with contemporary images of Birmingham and desolate snow landscapes. The conversation between Akomfrah and Benali takes place at De Balie from 15:30. The screening of Mnemosyne starts at 17:15 in the Film Room of De Balie. My name is Vincent van der Laken. I am a student at the Koning Willem 1 College in 's-Hertogenbosch, studying Filmmaking.
