Inspiring workplace Amsterdam and/or Huizen

BTW. 18jan: taxi to the dark side (2007)

TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE (2007) Directed by Alex Gibney 106 minutes In English This is a shocking documentary by Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) about the United States government\'s interrogation practices during the \"war on terror\". One major sub-plot of the film is the story of Dilawar, an Afghan taxi driver who was held in Bagram, a U.S. detention center for suspected terrorists. After 2 days of torture he was dead. However, the film explains how Dilawar was actually an innocent man turned in by the actual criminal seeking to throw investigators off his trail. One expert explains how only about 1% of the detainees are actual terrorists and that the vast majority were not even arrested by the U.S. military....but rather were turned in by Pakistani and Afghan bounty hunters seeking financial compensation. The numerous forms of abuse and torture inflicted on these foreign detainees is depicted in gruesome detail. The methods of torture included not only water boarding but also various means of sexual humiliation. The ultimate goal was inflicting a complete mental, physical and emotional breakdown on the prisoners. Other tactics used were sleep deprivation achieved by handcuffing detainees to the ceiling for days at a time and the sort of physical beatings that led to the death of Dilawar. The situation at Bagram is just the starting point. The film goes on to show that the program at Bagram was deemed such a success that it served as the model for Abu Graibh the following year in Iraq, and both prisons became pipelines to the detainee facility at Guantánamo, Cuba. There are very few films about these detention centers and this one is simply devastating...a real stunner. DE NIEUWE ANITA Frederik Hendrikstraat 111 (Hugo de Grootplein) 18 january Doors open at 19:30 Film starts at 20:30 sharp

20jan: salo -the 120 days of sodom (1975)

TUESDAY JANUARY 20th SALO -THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM (1975) By Pier Paolo Pasolini 116 minutes In Italian with English subtitles This film has been described as \"the most dangerous film of all time\". Pasolini\'s brilliant and uncompromising depiction of Italy under Fascism- a film which perhaps cost the director his own life. Argentinian/French director Gaspar Noe says that people should watch this film once every year, like he does himself, in order to remind oneself of the dangers of complacency. Based loosely on the Marquis de Sade\'s book about the decadence of 18th century France, we are shown the upper class – always removed and protected from the outer world – as predators of the poor, weak, young, and less educated. A group of the powerful elite hunt down teenagers from the surrounding villages. They are gathered together to be the victims of their host\'s unbridled desires...which includes torture and sexual debasement. There has never been another film which so unflinchingly depicts the abuse of power by those in power. It remains one of the most passionately debated films of all time, a thought-provoking inquiry into the political, social, and sexual dynamics that define the world we live in. Many, including me, feel that this is the masterpiece of Pasolini\'s career...and that it is one of the most relevant films of the last century. And the fact that I am screening this film the day after showing a film about the Abu Ghraib and Guantanomo US detention centers (TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE) is striking. You can see how Pasolini is always relevant. The overlap between a film made in Italy in 1975 about fascism and a documentary made last year about how US soldiers behave is unbelievably huge.
