Red desert (the red desert) 1964

TUESDAY DECEMBER 23 RED DESERT (IL DESERTO ROSSO) 1964 Directed by Michelangelo Antonioni 120 minutes In Italian with English subtitles Richard Harris and Monica Vitti star in director Michelangelo Antonioni\'s 60s masterpiece about industrialization and he modern world. Giuliana (Vitti), a young and mentally distressed woman, has attempted to take her life. Although she is married to an inspiring young industrialist, and has a young son, she feels estranged from her relatives and disconnected from the surrounding world. She does not know how to connect to it and feels that something goes terribly wrong. So she wanders, searching for meaning in the industrial lunar landscape of Northern Italy, to no avail. The story is set in the industrial area of Ravenna full of huge cold factories and machines, and a polluted river valley. The visuals are dominated by pastel colors and cold whiteness with smoke and fog covering everything, and the sound design by repetitive ghostly ship horns and an eerie electronic music score. Forty years after it was made, this film is amazing for many reasons, mostly perhaps for Antonioni\'s daring, bold, unique and amazing sense of colour. Great performances all around, great camera work, soundtrack - it\'s perfect. The theme is one that Antonioni has explored since his very first film: the emotional and physical impact of modern alienation. A rewarding, astonishing and visionary film in every sense. Highly acclaimed as a masterpiece of visual form and the winner of the International Critics Award for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival in 1964. 22dec crazy love

next Monday we will be screening one of the strangest documentaries from 2007. I think its a great film to wrap up the year with....so hope to see you there! By the way, this is the last screening of the year at the ANITA. We will be closed for one week, but will be re-opening with a special evening on Monday January 5th! MONDAY DECEMBER 22nd CRAZY LOVE (2007) Directed by Dan Klores 92 minutes In English This film was one of the very best documentaries made last year. Dan Klores\' CRAZY LOVE tells the astonishing true story of the obsessive relationship of Burt and Linda Pugach which shocked the nation during the summer of 1959. When Burt Pugach, a 32 year-old married attorney, met Linda, a beautiful young girl living in the Bronx, the fell head over heals and they had a whirlwind romance which culminated in a set of outrageous actions. Basically when Burt discovered that Linda was engaged to marry another man, he hired thugs to throw lye ( basically acid) in her face, which left her blind. Burt is convicted of the crime and is sentenced to 30 years in prison. But during all his time in prison Burt never forgot about his beloved Linda, and once he was free he continued to pursue her for marriage....and she agreed! This is the stuff that this insane documentary is made of. Its crazy enough that it could have come out of a John Waters film! This flabbergasting true story is slowly unveiled, but the key to the movie, though, is not the plot so much as the characters: Not only are Burt and Linda a fascinating psychological study, all of their friends are wacky personalities as well, each with their own story on what happened. The big events are bizarre enough, but it\'s the strange small twists and turns--for example just how Pugach and Riss were brought back together again after so many years --that push the story into the realm of bizarre surrealism. Winner of the Grande Jury Prize at the Sundance film festival. DE NIEUWE ANITA Frederik Hendrikstraat 111 (Hugo de Grootplein) Doors open at 19:30 Film starts at 20:30 sharp
