Fedor Sendak
A Love Song (1950) + Big Bang Love (2006)
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 4th
SONG OF LOVE (Un chant d\'amour) 1950
Directed by Jean Genet
26 minutes
Jean Genet\'s wonderfully transgressive film, the only one he directed in his lifetime. Two prisoners, set apart in adjacent cells, can only make love through thick walls. Sex is made of small details, fantasy, memory and smoke. One of the most poetic films ever made and a crowning achievement in Genet\'s own career. The film was considered obscene and therefore banned in America and had to be smuggled across the border to be shown there.

BIG BANG LOVE, JUVENILE A (46-okunen no koi) 2006
Directed by Takashi Miike
85 minutes
In Japanese with English subtitles
In this remarkable film Takashi Miike (Audition, The Happiness of the Katakuris) excels in a visual poetry unlike anything he has been able to achieve before. It has a surrealistic visionary quality and is perhaps the most creative and least violent of all the films he has made. In this film he transforms a prison into almost a Buddhist temple, set in an eerie vision of the future. What can I say, Miike has made so many films, and in this one all his skill and insight seems to come together.
\"Inside a juvenile detention center, two young prisoners from vastly different backgrounds experience a bond that transcends their tormented past. As they open their hearts to each other, life around them dissolves between a real world murder mystery, and a surreal journey filled with images of a primitive past and an ambiguous future.\"
Miike says that he thinks this is the best film he has ever done, and aesthetically it\'s gorgeous. He has basically gone back to the era of German Expressionism and turned it into a Phantasmagoria of color and set-design. Reality is thrown out the window in favor of a poetic narrative in this film. Light, shadows, heat and flesh flare at every corner.
