6 oct: punishment park (1971)

MONDAY OCTOBER 6th PUNISHMENT PARK (1971) Directed by Peter Watkins 88 minutes In English Peter Watkins is one of the most important filmmakers still living....he stands right up there with Godard in creating his own vision of cinema and social responsibility. And also like many visionaries Watkins has mostly been criticized for making absurd claims, only to find out a few years later that everything he said was true. PUNISHMENT PARK is Watkins view of America in the 60s. He considered it a sort of science fiction film of the future, and actually its parallels with Guantanamo Bay are chilling. Watkins films tend to be banned in the country he makes them in, and it was also true of this film which was banned as being unamerican. Made with a cast of unprofessional actors, who contributed in the creation of the piece, this is an example of spontaneous filmmaking at its most intelligent....a pseudo-documentary which has absolutely astounding results. \"Call it a pseudo-documentary, an outrageous piece of propaganda, perhaps even a paranoid fantasy, but one description that definitely does not apply to Punishment Park is \"light entertainment.\" Brit director Peter Watkins offers a chilling scenario, set in the early \'70s, in which, according to an edict called the McCarran Act, the U.S. government has the right to detain (without bail, evidence, or anything resembling a fair trial) anyone who \"probably will engage in certain future acts of sabotage.\" MONDAY OCTOBER 6th CINEMANITA @ De Nieuwe Anita Frederik Hendrikstraat 111 (Hugo de Grootplein) Doors open at 19:30 Film starts at 20:30 sharp

The full description of the project is in the files attached. Then, if you have a very good short film project you would like to develop, “European Short Pitch” is for you! Deadline for application is the 31st of October 2008. Applications for THE NETHERLANDS MeccaPANZA - to be sent at [email protected] - your application should include: -a CV -a motivation letter -the application form filed (attached) -a script (maximum 20 000 characters). Please advertise “European Short Pitch” only to a limited “circle” of people you know are currently working on good short film projects. The aim is not to repeat a script contest, and receiving many bad scripts, but few very good ones. We are waiting for your applications!!! P.S.1: Selection of participants will be made by an European reading committee composed of two boards members: Azed Kettani, vice-president in charge of Production and Fedor Limperg, Contest manager, the European Office staff (Joanna Gallardo and Matthieu Darras), and volunteers from NM. P.S.2: It’s important to know that NISI MASA has not received yet an official positive answer from the MEDIA+ Program, supposed to finance this project. Taking this uncertainty into account, we still have to launch this call to respect our agenda... Some hopefully good confirmation news soon...
