Last week, shoot began for the animated film 'Dag meneer de Vries', one of the 10 short films in the NTR KORT! series, which will premiere at the Netherlands Film Festival in September 2012. 'Dag meneer de Vries', by director Mascha Halberstad and screenwriter Fiona van Heemstra, is unique because no stop-motion puppet animation has ever been made in the KORT! series before. 'Goodbye Mr. de Vries' is the moving story of 93-year-old Mr. de Vries, who spends his final days at the window of his wooden cottage in Waterland. Until an unexpected messenger shakes him awake. 'Dag meneer de Vries' is a stop-motion puppet animation by the team also responsible for the animations of the successful Dutch youth film 'Patatje Oorlog': director Mascha Halberstad and stop-motion creator Huub Kistemaker. The screenplay is by Fiona van Heemstra, who previously wrote the VPRO series Willemspark and the books and animated series Pim & Pom, among others. Together with Huub Kistemaker, director Mascha Halberstad will be working on shooting the film over the coming months. This is being done entirely analog, which means that all shooting is recorded frame by frame by hand and no special effects are added afterwards. 'Dag meneer de Vries' is produced by Viking Film, the recently established film production company of Marleen Slot. Viking Film makes internationally oriented, high-quality films for a Dutch and international audience.

World Cinema Amsterdam screens more than forty independent films from Latin America, Africa, and Asia in, among other things, an extensive competition program and a free open-air program. As usual, there are Q&As, masterclasses, debates, and parties. The festival welcomes twenty filmmakers this year. Country in focus 2012: Brazil Under the banner of Brazilian Stories, the festival pays special attention to recent independent cinema from Brazil. While until recently mainly commercial films were produced in Brazil, in recent years a new generation of filmmakers has been making its presence felt. They often tell small, intimate stories or focus on social issues. Such as A cidade é uma só? (Is It Only One City?) by Adirley Queirós, which portrays the bizarre history of a suburb of Brasilia that was moved in its entirety from one side of Brasilia to the other in the 1960s for 'aesthetic' reasons.
