Composer
Composer/pianist/synth player with experience in theatre, dance and film
After graduating cum laude in California, he was awarded the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to come to the Netherlands. He was awarded the Prize for Composition of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, and then he received a prize for an electronic work in France, a grant from IPEM (Belgium) and his tone poem 'Prefeeling' was performed by Residentie Orkest (aka Hague Philharmonic) played.
Since then, Gene Carl has worked with many ensembles and groups (including Hoketus, Andriessen's group, Schïnberg Ensemble, NBE, Canto Ostinato, the 4-piano ensemble and opera de Materie). He has worked on behalf of Maarten Altena Ensemble, Holland Dance Festival, Korzo Theater, Pomona College, Hoketus, NFPK, Stroom and has written extensively for dance: Scapino, NND, Galili Dans, Anouk van Dijk, Cadance, and Thomas Noone Dance (Barcelona). ). Gene has lived in The Hague since 1975.
His latest major project was with Toneelgroep Amsterdam for the production Ifigeneia in Aulis. At the moment Gene is working with Wilco Botermans in Electric Storks, an electronic music duo, with the choreographer, Marijke de Vos for an interactive electronic dance piece for Melkweg. The Gene Carl Band recently recorded a CD that will be presented at BIM in 2012.
During the past years he has given music workshops at Zwolse Conservatorium, Rïling College (Groningen), Koorenhuis (The Hague), and Conservatorium te Den Haag in addition to private lessons in composition, piano, theory and counterpoint. He graduated cum laude (including courses for his Masters) where he worked as a teacher ('work/study program') for 1.5 years and then taught music at various schools.
