KING OF DEVIL'S ISLAND opens 33rd Northern Film

The Northern Film Festival opens its 33rd edition on Wednesday, November 9 in Leeuwarden with the feature film King of Devil's Island by Marius Holst (Norway). To mark the opening, director Marius Holst will present his film in Leeuwarden. Prior to the main feature, the Northern Film Festival will screen the award-winning short film Olifantenvoeten in the presence of its maker, Dan Geesin. The opening films mark the start of an extensive film program at the Northern Film Festival. The festival runs through Sunday, November 13. King of Devil's Island (Kongen av Bastøy) had its world premiere in its home country of Norway in late December 2010. Earlier this year, King of Devil's Island won the Norwegian National Film Awards for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Music. The King of Devil's Island is a thriller based on true events about a reformatory on the Norwegian island of Bastøy. The film tells the story of seventeen-year-old Erling, who arrives at the institute in 1915. Although determined to escape, circumstances make him the leader of a violent rebellion. Marius Holst made his debut in 1994 with the feature film Cross My Heart and Hope to Die. The film was a Norwegian box office success and internationally won the prestigious Prix de Montreal at the World Film Festival in Montreal and the Blue Angel Award at the Berlinale. King of Devil's Island is, after Dragnflies (2001) and Mirush (2006), Marius Holst's fourth and most ambitious feature film. The short film Elephant Feet won the Golden Calf for Best Short Film at the most recent Netherlands Film Festival. Visual artist, composer, and filmmaker Dan Geesin, born in England, uses Elephant Feet to allude to the 'Dutch immigration problem'. In Elephant Feet, Thomas, a white immigrant, experiences quite unexpected things during his first night shift at a gas station. The Northern Film Festival officially kicks off with the opening films. The beating heart of this program is the Interregional Competition: a selection of eight films competing for the Matad'Or and the associated cash prize of €10,000. The full program of the Northern Film Festival will be published on Tuesday, October 25, in the festival program newspaper, as a supplement to the Leeuwarder Courant, and online at www.noordelijkfilmfestival.nl. King of Devil's Island, from distributor Amstelfilm, will be shown in Dutch cinemas from December 8, 2011.

NBF network drink 31 Oct: traditional vs innovative

As is well known, the Network Drinks for Film and TV (NBF) has been taking place every last Monday of the month at SMART Project Space/LAB111 for almost two years. Starting this month, the event is getting a fresh look. In addition to the well-known formula of networking, drinks, and the dinner deal, a substantive program with discussion will now be offered, featuring a different theme each month. This month, the topic 'Traditional versus Innovative' takes center stage. Program Technological advancement is moving forward at a breakneck pace these days, creating ever more opportunities for both professional audiovisual makers and amateur filmmakers. A professional camera is within the cost reach of every filmmaker, and editing software can be used immediately by almost anyone after a short course. The filmed material can then be shared quickly and easily with a large audience via websites like YouTube and Vimeo. Initiatives like Upload Cinema show that YouTube videos made by 'amateurs' have emerged from obscurity and that the line between professional content and amateur videos is becoming increasingly blurred. This evening, together with the panelists, we want to take stock of the changes currently taking place in the field and provide tools to those struggling with their position in the evolving landscape. As a creator, how can you ensure you create opportunities for yourself and benefit from the new technical possibilities? What are the pros and cons of this increase in new techniques and platforms? And what is the impact on the audiovisual world and the creators? Panel members: Jean van de Velde – versatile filmmaker and screenwriter of, among others, 'De Kleine Blonde Dood', 'Wild Romance', and both 'All Stars' films. Chairman of the Screenwriters Network. Jules van den Steenhoven - Director of Photography in the broadest sense of the word, involved in various Dutch feature films, including 'De Kleine Blonde Dood', 'Wild Romance', and both 'All Stars' films. Chairman of the Netherlands Society of Cinematographers (NSC). Bobby Boermans – a young filmmaker through and through – recently made his feature film debut with the film 'Claustrofobia' for Snoop Entertainment, the first feature film from the Netherlands made specifically for the internet (www.bobbyboermans.com). Dagan Cohen (TBC) - founder of Upload Cinema (www.uploadcinema.net), an initiative that brings internet videos to the big screen in a thematic program. Also creative director of Draftfcb. Dinner deal The LAB111 restaurant is offering an attractive and affordable dinner deal especially for the NBF networking drinks: for €17.50, you get a starter and a main course, including a drink. You can register for the dinner deal at the NBF office via [email protected] or 020-6646588, no later than Friday, October 28. Dinner will be served in the restaurant at 19:00.
