CINEBLEND: Slavery and Slavery Junior

Cineblend, the monthly evening of SAVAN (Dutch Foundation for Audiovisual Anthropology) featuring dinner, film, and debate, kicks off the new season on Tuesday, October 4 with: Slavery and Slavery Junior The five-part television series *De Slavernij* (Slavery) provides a picture of the history of slavery in the former Dutch colonies through diaries, personal documents, and interviews with experts. Presented by Daphne Bunskoek and Roué Verveer, the series adopts the perspective of ordinary people and aims for a broad audience, partly by airing the series during prime time (Sundays at 8:15 PM). A youth version has also been produced, which airs prior to the adult version on Sundays at 6:15 PM. Tonight we will be talking to some of the creators of the two series. Is slavery still a relevant issue? Why was this approach chosen, with two well-known Dutch personalities as presenters? Why was a Junior series also produced? And how do the Junior and the Adult episodes differ? How do you convey such a difficult subject to both adults and young people? What choices are made in doing so? And why were well-known Dutch personalities chosen as presenters? The guests are: Katinka de Maar: director of De Slavernij Junior. She began as a documentary filmmaker in 1990 and studied at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and the Media Academy in Hilversum. Katinka worked for three years at a mixed primary school in Amsterdam-North and, as a freelance director, has focused on documentaries about the lives of children worldwide. She has already won various awards at film festivals for her work. Lyangelo Vasquez: researcher for the series Slavery. Has also worked as a web editor for VPRO's Andere Tijden. Evelien Vehof: freelance journalist and editor for De Slavernij Junior and other television programs. She is a member of the Mediaridders, an Amsterdam association of investigative journalists. Together with Els Duran, she established the multimedia project 'Citizens of Nowhere' about the lives of stateless people worldwide. The moderator for this evening is Milouska Meulens, born in Curaçao and a presenter for the NOS Jeugdjournaal since 2000. She studied at the Utrecht School of Journalism and has worked as a researcher for the program Zembla, among others. Milouska also produces segments for the Jeugdjournaal. We look forward to seeing you at this inspiring evening! For more information: www.savan.nl/cineblend, [email protected], 020 - 5688 520

Guusje van Deuren winner NVS Producers Award

On Friday, September 23, Guusje van Deuren won the NVS Producers Award for her graduation films GEEN WEG TERUG (drama) and KLUIZENAAR (documentary). This award is presented annually by the producers' association NVS during the Netherlands Film Festival to encourage promising young producers. The ceremony took place at 5:00 PM at the Louis Hartlooper Complex 1, following the 'Day of Makers of Tomorrow'. This is the third year the award has been presented. The main criterion is the manner in which the producer functioned within the producer-director-screenwriter triangular relationship of the filmmakers. Other nominees for the NVS Producers Award for best producer of a graduation film were Edwin Goldman, ALS IK JOU NIET HAD (documentary), DESIDERATUM (drama) and HET ONOPMERKELIJKE LEVEN VAN HANS BOORMAN (drama), and Nanneke Landman, DESTINY (documentary) and ONZE VADERS (documentary). The NVS Producers Award consists of a prize of EUR 5,000 from the Dutch Association of Feature Film Producers. Last year, the prize was awarded to Floor Houwink ten Cate and Jemima van der Tholen for the productions MO and WINTERSLAAP IN LUKIMOR. The jury members of the NVS Producers Award are producers Hanneke Niens (KeyFilm) and San Fu Maltha (Fu Works). The jury commends Guusje van Deuren for her guiding principles in setting up a project: relevance and urgency. According to the jury, she succeeded in getting the best out of the team and clearly also left her mark on the final creative product. The jury concludes: 'Certainly with the film GEEN WEG TERUG, a film that matters, Guusje shows she is on her way to becoming a producer who matters.' About the NVS Producers Award By awarding this prize, the NVS aims to encourage young production talent to give substance to the profession of producer as the NVS envisions it: the producer as maker, driving force, and creative entrepreneur. The role of the producer within the producer-director-screenwriter triangle was assessed on various aspects, such as his or her substantive influence during the development, production, and post-production phases, and the producer's influence on the final cut. Additionally, the producer's input on the selection of the cast and heads of department, the course of production, the market potential of the project, financing and the shooting schedule, the positioning of the project, and the final evaluation of the overall combination of story, direction, cinematography, music/effects/sound, production design, and CGI (computer-generated imagery) was considered.

Feature debut Marc van Uchelen premieres at NFF

On Sunday, September 25, Marc van Uchelen's feature film debut premieres at the Netherlands Film Festival. The film was made in a unique way: without a budget and filmed entirely with webcams, cameras the size of a matchbox. WEBCAM is the tragicomic story of Antoin, a bachelor who is tired of being alone. When his neighbor Rob offers to help him with online dating, he eagerly accepts the offer. A miracle happens: Rob finds the Russian Natasha for Antoin and has her come over to the Netherlands. What Antoin doesn't know, however, is that Natasha is actually the secret internet mistress of the married Rob, who is seizing this opportunity to have her close to him. Van Uchelen had been mulling over the story of Webcam for some time, but could not find funding to turn it into a film. Therefore, he sought a clever way to visualize the story and came up with the idea of shooting the film entirely using webcams. For this, he used extreme sports cameras the size of a matchbox. Director Marc van Uchelen also wrote the story for the film and asked his alter ego Horace Cohen to play the lead role. Additionally, John Buijsman, Frieda Pittoors, Angelique de Bruijne, Fabian Jansen, Tara Baerveldt, and Lies Visschedijk play roles in the film. WEBCAM has been selected for the Golden Calf competition and can be seen multiple times this week at the Netherlands Film Festival. The film has also been included in the Cinema Delicatessen program 'NFF on Tour 2011' following the festival.
