The documentary 'Daughters of Malakeh' by Jet Homoet and Sharog Heshmat Manesh has its world premiere at the Canadian Hot Docs International Documentary Festival, the largest documentary festival in North America. The documentary will be screened in the official 'International Spectrum' competition. 'Daughters of Malakeh' shows how women in contemporary Iran struggle between two worlds to maintain control over their own lives. In the outside world of Iran, Maryam, Ghazal, and their mother Malakeh wear the mandatory headscarf and adhere to the strict rules of the state. But within the family's inner world, it is these three women who determine what happens. When breadwinner Maryam wants to get married, the extent to which these two worlds clash becomes apparent, setting the entire family in motion. One of the family members is Sharog Heshmat Manesh, who lives in the Netherlands. Through this brother, son, and co-director, we enter an inner world that normally remains closed. As a result, 'Daughters of Malakeh' offers a unique glimpse into Iranian family life.
