Film debate on human rights in Iran

Film debate on human rights in Iran Sunday October 3 (2:00 PM - 5:00 PM), Filmtheater Kriterion, Amsterdam The human rights situation in Iran is again in the news due to the planned stoning of Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani. She is accused by the government of adultery. Her case is not an isolated one. There are many more citizens in Iran who are confronted with horrific injustice every day. On October 3, the Iran Committee will organize a theme afternoon in Kriterion, where film and a debate will focus on human rights violations in Iran, including in the areas of freedom of expression, women's rights and corporal punishment. The program will open with the documentary 'Women in Shroud' (75 minutes). The documentary offers us a glimpse into the lives of a group of lawyers and human rights activists in Iran. They are committed to opposing the death penalty by stoning, but this also puts them in great danger themselves. In this documentary, directors Mohammad Reza Kazemi and Farid Haerinejad have compellingly depicted how far freedom and democracy still lie in Iran. This will be followed by a debate with a panel of experts, each in their own way committed to improving the human rights situation in Iran. Marietje Schaake, Member of Parliament from D'66, will give her vision in a video message. The panel in the room will be chaired by, among others, Han ten Broeke, foreign spokesperson in the House of Representatives for the VVD and Mina Saadadi, editor-in-chief of Shahrzad News. Based on the documentary shown, they will explain their views on recent developments in Iran. The panel debate will be moderated by Frank van Dalen, chairman of the Iran Committee. Admission is free, you can register via: [email protected] Location: Filmtheater Kriterion, Roetersstraat 170, Amsterdam. For directions, visit www.kriterion.nl/info For more information about the Iran Committee: www.irancomite.nl This event is made possible by the NCDO and the Jan Vrijman Fund.

Follow young documentary makers on their journey through Europe

New DocBlog: Istanbul Express Follow young documentary filmmakers on their journey through Europe. A diverse, international group of 45 young filmmakers is traveling through Europe by train for three weeks, with Istanbul as their final destination. During the train journey, they will visit 23 cities and produce fifteen documentaries on the subject of: What does the multilingualism of the new generation of Europeans bring with it? New loves, cross-border conflicts, transnational careers? Over the coming weeks, the makers will be blogging about their experiences along the way on the DocBlog. The journey began on September 20 in three different locations: Tallinn, San Sebastian, and Turin. As the trains race towards Istanbul and cross various national borders, the different film crews are making documentaries at a rapid pace. Along the way, there are stops where workshops are on the program and filming also takes place. On September 28 and 29, the filmmakers will visit Amsterdam and film in the Bijlmer and in 'Chinatown' around the Nieuwmarkt. Dutch participant Bibi Bleekemolen has already blogged the following about it: 'In less than two weeks, the Istanbul Express train will arrive in my hometown Amsterdam. The subject is a second generation Chinese man who will show us his home and workplace, and can tell about his bonds with the 'dragon country'. A great challenge, as I've been told the Chinese community is usually closed for outsiders and generally don't kiss and tell.' On October 10, the trains arrive in Istanbul, the European Capital of Culture 2010, where the films will be edited and screened. In early 2011, Holland Doc 24 will broadcast a selection of the documentaries. Istanbul Express is a production of NISI MASA, the European network for young filmmakers. Photographer and film academy student make Ben commercials

Communications agency KesselsKramer, which launched Ben in 1999, has developed a new campaign for Ben vrij, the prepaid product of this telecom provider. The agency came up with the name Ben vrij and let two young filmmakers a total of 11 Directing TV commercials. Alain Friedrichs and Sarah Carlier were given only one instruction: show people on the phone in a distinctive way who feel completely free. The only constraint: it has to fit within 10 seconds. Alain Friedrichs (29) is a third-year student at the Netherlands Film and Television Academy in Amsterdam. In 2006, he won the Student Award at the Netherlands Film Festival with his short film 'Façade'. During his studies, he made the trailer for the Cinestud festival, among other things. Alain directed 'footballer in living room', 'girl in bath' and 'grandma in square' for Ben. Alain on making the films: 'For a ten-second commercial, absolute simplicity is necessary. There is only time to sketch a situation. You can then relatively easily evoke a sense of freedom with atmospheric images and fine music, but we deliberately did not want to work abstractly. As a result, we looked for situations where no dramatic arc is needed to understand the comedic slant with a wink at freedom. The cliché proves itself once again: less is more. Sarah Carlier (28) is a photographer from Izegem in Belgium. She lives in The Hague, where she studied photographic design at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts. As a photographer, she has worked for cultural institutions and magazines and exhibited her own work in Rotterdam, Brussels, and Leuven, among other places. Her film experience leads back to her own projects, in which she pushes the boundaries of the medium of photography. Her films are characterized by a constant frame where the image changes only due to the movement of the characters. In addition, Sarah is currently completing a photo/film project in Romania. For Ben, she directed 'man in hotel', 'line-dance group', 'living statue', and 'grandpa on the street'. Sarah: 'I wanted the commercials for Ben to be as pure and realistic as possible, but combined with fantasy and humor. By sticking to this, I try to take the viewer into a recognizable reality and a somewhat bizarre world of imagination.' Starting September 20, the TV commercials will be shown in a series of 3 within a single commercial break. Click here for an overview of all the videos and here for the work of Sarah Carlier. Joods Film Festival 2010: Family in Focus

The ninth edition of the Jewish Film Festival, titled Family in Focus, opens on October 14 with the Dutch premiere of the moving film adaptation of the bestseller 'Her Name Was Sarah' by author Tatiana de Rosnay. The author will be in attendance. From October 14 to 17, 2010, films by Jewish filmmakers and/or films with a Jewish theme will be screened at Pathe Tuschinski. The festival will be opened by Jac. Goderie. The Jewish Film Festival offers a unique opportunity to see films that have often not been screened in the Netherlands before and that provide a colorful picture of Jewish family life in all its aspects. 'Her Name Was Sarah' tells the story of ten-year-old Sarah, who is arrested along with her parents on the night of July 16, 1942, and taken to the Velodrome d'Hiver in Paris, the place where thousands of Jews are gathered for deportation. Sixty years later, Julia Jarmond, an American journalist in Paris, is assigned to write an article about this raid. She searches through archives and discovers Sarah's file. A selection of the other films being shown: In '9 Years Later', a woman (born to a Jewish mother and a Muslim father) is followed in her persistent struggle to have her son grow up at home. The beautiful and surprising 'Everything Is Illuminated', based on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer, depicts a grandson's search for his ancestors. And 'La vie devant soi', the moving film starring the unforgettable actress Simone Signoret, shows what the loss of family can lead to. For the first time this year, the festival is being held in the country's most festive theater: Pathe Tuschinski in Amsterdam. This Jugendstil cinema, as magnificent as it is memorable, was commissioned by the Polish-Dutch Jewish Abraham Icek Tuschinski and opened its doors in 1921. During the Second World War, the cinema fell into the hands of the Nazis and was given the non-Jewish name Tivoli. Tuschinski was deported to Poland via transit camp Westerbork in 1942 and murdered in Auschwitz. Being allowed to hold the Jewish Film Festival here is nevertheless a respectful tribute. Parwin Mirrahimy unravels 'About Elly'

This autumn, Filmtheater De Uitkijk will be screening the award-winning Iranian film About Elly. In this film, director Ashgar Farhadi takes us on a trip to the Caspian Sea, where a group of college friends is enjoying a well-deserved short vacation. However, Sepideh, who arranges everything down to the last detail, also has a hidden agenda: her goal is to set up Elly, her daughter's beautiful kindergarten teacher, with Ahmad, who has just returned from Germany after a divorce. As the chemistry between Elly and Ahmad grows, they become increasingly entangled in a web of lies designed to conceal the true nature of the weekend getaway. Until Elly suddenly disappears. Asghar Farhadis' About Elly won a Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival last year and was Iran's official entry for the Oscars. With this film, Filmtheater De Uitkijk has chosen a unique insight into the lives of the upper middle classes of modern Iranian society and its far-reaching culture of politeness (tarof), which easily leads to deceit—even among friends. About Elly is a skillfully directed drama that surprisingly unfolds into a gripping thriller, in which lies and truth are inextricably linked. On Friday, October 1, Parwin Mirrahimy, Director of the Iranian Film Festival, will deliver a special introduction to About Elly. Mirrahimy founded the Iranian Film Festival in 2006 to introduce the Dutch public to the rich Iranian cinema in an innovative way. Since then, the Iranian Film Festival has grown into a major success, the first in Europe to do so, where film, music, art, and debate are blended with contemporary Iranian culture. About Elly, with an introduction by Parwin Mirrahimy (Iranian Film Festival) Director: Asghar Farhadi, Iran, 2009 Language: Persian, German Duration: 119 minutes Friday, October 1, 2010, starting around 9 o'clock.
