Liz Rosenthal Gives Variety Cinema Militans Lecture

Liz Rosenthal gives Variety Cinema Militans Lecture at the Netherlands Film Festival Liz Rosenthal, founder and director of Power to the Pixel in London, will deliver this year's Variety Cinema Militans Lecture. In this lecture, she will present her vision on the future of cinema in today's society. The lecture will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at 6:00 PM at Ottone in Utrecht. The lecture is organized annually as part of the Holland Film Meeting, the international program of the Netherlands Film Festival. The recurring theme of the Variety Cinema Militans Lecture, 'the position and viability of cinema in the present time', is an adaptation of the theme from the essay 'Cinema Militans' by the Dutch film theorist and critic Menno ter Braak from 1926. Thanks to digitalization, a growing number of people have the opportunity to make and distribute films. The battle for the viewer is complicated by an overcrowded market, where public attention is divided across countless new stages, games, online activities, and real life. Therefore, the film industry must forge new avenues to both engage future audiences and harness this unprecedented new viewing potential, while also increasing the importance and value of film stories. This means that the key to a digital future lies particularly in the relationship with the audience. In her lecture – Tales from the Digital Frontier – Rosenthal outlines how a new generation of independent filmmakers and producers uses multiple platforms to tell their stories, appeals to millions of viewers, and establishes an entirely new industry in the process. Rosenthal is a pioneer and leading advocate of digital distribution and production, and an expert in the field of digital film and media. She acts as an advisor to international media companies, film financiers, filmmakers, and film festivals on deploying the very latest distribution and production techniques and new business models. Liz Rosenthal was recently appointed Digital Distribution Strategy Advisor to the UK Film Council. Power to the Pixel, founded in 2007, is a company dedicated to supporting film and other media during the transition to a digital age. In previous years, the Variety Cinema Militans Lecture was delivered by, among others, George Sluizer, Marc Rothemund, Marion Hänsel, István Szabó, Peter Greenaway, Mira Nair, Tom Tykwer, and Alan J. Pakula. The Variety Cinema Militans Lecture is featured in the Daily on Variety.com and in the Weekly Variety. The Netherlands Film Festival takes place from 23 September to 2 October 2009. The Holland Film Meeting takes place from Thursday 24 September to Monday 28 September.

Duo HKU Film students is looking for an Internship

Dear Sir / Madam, We are two third-year film students at the Utrecht School of the Arts, studying Audiovisual Media. For our internship we are still looking for a possible suitable internship. Our specialization is that of directing fiction and directing/camera fiction. We think it would be great fun to work as a duo somewhere on a film set, or at a production office or television program. In principle, we are open to different tasks; from developing a making of to making a short item or offering any assistance on a film set. Our previous collaboration as a director and cameraman has led us to want to develop further together. Our training has kept us busy with many different projects for two years; from making various short fiction films, to television programs, short documentaries and advertising, with the result that our work experience (at a semi-professional level) has become very broad. Because our training puts together both large teams and small teams for the various projects, we learn to work in a team on the set as well as to perform an independent completion from script to editing. Do you know something nice that we could do for you or your production? Then we would like to hear more and possibly come by for an introductory meeting and a presentation of previous work experience. Yours sincerely, Remy Schepers & Rosanne Pel email: [email protected] / [email protected] phone: 06-29439997 / 06-45838842
