In nine out of ten fun commercials, unknown actors play the lead role. Directors and creatives love discovering actors, unknown talents, and new faces, who in turn become famous as a result.
Comedian Eric Koller performs 80 shows a year in the theater and could walk down the street unrecognizable, but since he was cast as the zany Suzuki car salesman, he is approached more and more often. The Dutch/English Joshua Rubin confirms this as well; since he regularly appears on television as a critical auctioneer for Independer, people recognize him on the street, although they often don't know from where. Requests come in from Spain, the Czech Republic, England, Germany, and even the USA because our database represents all ethnic actors that are unavailable abroad, says André Sjouerman about his agency. Amsterdam is just like New York in that respect; a measurement pot, adds colleague Rozanne van Boxtel. But the height of the Dutch is also known abroad. For an English VW commercial, they were looking for a towering actress to suggest the spaciousness of the UP!. They could not find a suitable actress in London, so the assignment came to Amsterdam, and they could choose from a dozen actresses of 1.82 meters and taller. Unknown, photogenic Dutch people who possess sufficient acting talent or naturalness and are not recognized on the street are welcome to register at the agency on Veemkade opposite the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam. They cast commercials, TV programs, films, and corporate productions there. There is a constant flow of professional theater and training actors, many of whom work in the corporate world delivering bad news or playing difficult customers.
Children also know how to find the agency, and so natural talent Mila, an 8-year-old girl from IJmuiden, recently landed the lead role as Pip in the latest Marktplaats commercial. The latest Hypotheker commercials feature real people who have never been in front of the camera before.
Requests for assistance regularly come from a well-known Berlin casting agency when they cannot find that one talent in Germany, and that is how 19-year-old Amsterdam actress Lisa Smit secured a major role in a major German feature film, 'Quellen des Lebens', which was nominated for the German Oscars. When the American TV series Covert Affairs recently filmed an episode in Amsterdam, they were looking for a pub owner who could swear in broad Amsterdam dialect; actor Geert Timmers, alias Bob Fosko, got the role. The director also insisted on having a famous Dutch star actress in the series, so every name falling into this category auditioned, until the director suddenly came up with his own idol from Denmark.
