Inspiration - every filmmaker needs it.

Rialto & Binger Inspire: June 10, 2009 Inspiration - every filmmaker needs it. That sometimes elusive little seed that is necessary to grow into a brilliant idea. The spark to fire the beginning of any creative project. Where do filmmakers find their inspiration? What inspires them? And once an idea has taken hold, how is it then turned into a plan, and action? For the second time this year Amsterdam film theatre Rialto and Binger Filmlab present an inspired evening\'s screening and conversation with international filmmakers developing their feature film projects in the Binger\'s Directors\' Coaching Programme. On June 10, Binger Filmlab artistic director Marten Rabarts will coax three filmmakers into sharing a few of their secrets about where they find inspiration. Nicholas Verso (Australia), Sacha Polak (Netherlands) and Adriana Montenegro (Bolivia) will each show one of their prizewinning short films, and by also showing excerpts from films or other art forms that inspired them, give some insight into the creative choices they made. The short films are respectively Hugo (2008, shown at festivals worldwide such as Chicago International Children\'s Film Festival, Cranberra Short Film Festival and won amongst others the Grand Prize of the Fantasy Film Festival Rhode Island en the Australian Writers Guild Award for Best Script), El Mourabbi (2007, script: Bastiaan Kroeger, was part of broadcasters NPS short film series Kort! and had it\'s premiere at the Netherlands Film Festival 2007. The film won the Prix Special Collégiens at the Festival Cinesonne in France) and Desde el Fondo (2008, that amongst others recently screened at the Latin American Film Festival of Catalunya and the Cine Iberoamericano de Huelva, both in Spain). Inspiration Night is for film lovers, and anyone else curious about creativity. Audience discussion and interaction will be warmly encouraged. Inspiration Night II: June 10, 2009 at 7.30 pm @ Rialto Reservation advised! Tickets can be reserved at: 020 - 676 8700 or are available at Rialto?s box office. Another Planet: premiere

SMART Cinema | Film Premiere Un Altro Pianeta dir. Stefano Tummolini (Italy, 2008, 82 min) Italian with English subtitles Wednesday 3 June, 20.15 hrs The story unfolds in a single day, from morning to sunset, on a public beach which is the meeting point of naturists and people looking for sex. On that summer morning, Salvatore is crossing the sand dunes heading towards the beach, savouring some quiet time in the sun. Little does he know this will be a day unlike any other.. A wooden fence separates the beach from the dunes, where an almost unreal silence reigns supreme. That is where people meet, like Salvatore and Daniela. In the course of the day, though unwillingly, Salvatore will have no choice but to face up to the ghosts of his past, struggle to regain his peace of mind and possibly open up a whole new life. Shot in roughly one week without state funding or economic assistance, Tummolini’s film is a stunning example of sensitive storytelling, where the emotion of discovering another human being and one true self become a real dramatic challenge. Winner of the Queer Lion for Best Film at the 2008 Venice Film Festival and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. Part of a monthly series dedicated to new Italian independent cinema. Please see our website for the entire film programme. Professional organizations in action for copyright

P h e n o m e n a (creepers) 1985

MONDAY JUNE 8 P H E N O M E N A (CREEPERS) 1985 Directed by Dario Argento 110 minutes In English Wow, this is certainly one of the craziest films that I have ever seen. I love it for the sheer audacity, for the guts that Argento had to really make it. But in the end its not only amazing that he made it, but that somehow, at least for me, he makes it work. I don\'t want to try to describe the plot at all in this one, which would be an impossible task for me anyway. Let\'s just say that basically Argento makes three types of film- Horror, thriller and supernatural...and this falls mostly into the supernatural category. And hey, it stars Jennifer Connelly (the main actress in Requiem for a Dream) in her first starring role- yep, this is how she broke into show business. The soundtrack is as insane as the \"unknown killer\" in the film, and is composed of music by Goblin, Motorhead, Bill Wyman and Iron Maiden! Thematically what is it about? Phenomena is an example of body-horror in Italian cinema which specifically targets adolescent anxieties about newly-awakened sexual desires and the shame that stems from physical deformity. So in other words, this is a film composed around emotional experiences (specifically the point in one\'s life when you change from one person into another) rather than a straight narrative....and indeed the narrative of this film is anything but straight! A very original film where Argento takes a load of risks....a film which is bizarre and surreal in a lucid dreamlike way, and which is visually absolutely stunning. So if you have an open mind, and are interested in taking an adventure, then this film is for you. Its unlike anything else out there... One viewer\'s comment: \"Italian horror maestro Dario Argento made his name by turning homicide into modern art with a cinematic flourish, but with Phenomena he takes his stylish mayhem in new directions. The film opens with the dreamy grace of a fairy tale: a young girl wandering the green meadows of Switzerland and discovering a gingerbread house, wherein lives a monster more modern than mythic, who plunges the picture into a lush nightmare. The densely plotted story becomes busy at times but the lyrical cinematography and gorgeous nocturnal imagery--dreamy sleepwalks, nightmarish murders, hideous horrors that emerge in the dark of night--take on a poetic elegance not seen in his previous work, providing the tale with a kind of dream logic.\" DE NIEUWE ANITA Frederik Hendrikstraat 111 (Hugo de Grootplein) Doors open at 19:30 Film starts at 20:30 sharp (good idea to come a bit early)
