Dare to look further at the Afghan Film Festival

News about bombings, failed elections and women in veils often dominate our coverage of Afghanistan. But do you dare to put the newspaper aside and delve into the real Afghanistan? On Saturday, November 13, a breath of fresh air will blow through the Netherlands with the first edition of the Afghan Film Festival. In the Rialto film theater in Amsterdam you will be treated to a sober, but optimistic view of the current situation in Afghanistan. With the help of cameras, our view shifts from the ISAF soldiers in Uruzgan to the young and creative Afghans, who shape their ideas about the future of Afghanistan through film, art and music. A small impression: CINEMA The documentary 'Vote Afghanistan!' (2009) offers a shocking look behind the scenes of last year's presidential elections. Directors Martin Herring & Havana Marking (known from 'Afghan Star') follow three presidential candidates, each in their own way wanting to change the political system in Afghanistan. But does the established order give this new political generation a chance? MUSIC No Urban bullshit about cars, money and beautiful women, but socially critical raps about his own life and the things he experiences. Up-and-coming rap talent DSI-BEL (17) will blow everyone away at the Afghan Film Festival with sharp Afghan lyrics. ART Childhood memories of Kabul interwoven with things you would rather erase from your memory; many artists from the Afghan diaspora have a complex and fascinating relationship with their past. In Jeanno Gaussi's exhibition 'Erased Memories', elements seem to be missing from her photos of Kabul. RIALTO LET: DEBATE AND ENTERTAINMENT In the talk show Zap Afghanistan, journalist Eefje Blankevoort asks some knowledgeable guests, such as Fatma Wakil, Deedee Derksen, Joeri Boom and Robert Kluijver, about their favorite and most absurd image fragments about Afghanistan. Resulting in a fiery debate surrounding our image of Afghanistan. For a quick preview, see: http://youtu.be/LvQdUz6hLDo The Afghan Film Festival continues until after midnight with DJ Roshan, who together with VJs Etsaman and Lucho Soldevilla give a creative performance in which Afghanistan and the West meet each other in a creative and very danceable way. Afghan Film Festival Saturday, November 13, from 3:00 PM to 3:00 AM Rialto Film Theater, Ceintuurbaan 338, Amsterdam www.afghaansfilmfestival.nl
