Holland Animati...

Holland Animation Film Festival is looking for volunteers!!!

screening: ALICE IN THE CITIES (October 19)

SUNDAY OCTOBER 19th ALICE IN DEN STADTEN (Alice in the Cities) 1974 Directed by Wim Wenders 110 minutes In German with English subtitles Largely unknown and really difficult to ever see because it is extremely rarely ever shown outside Germany, this film shines like a rough diamond. Therefore dont expect any polished surfaces and the kind of cheap sentimentality that leaks out and overtakes most of Wenders later films. This is Wenders when he is young, and when he was best. This road movie is stripped down, grainy, honest and extremely low-budget, and is, quite honestly, a breath of fresh air...especially in these days of extravagant budgets and slick productions. What is the story? The film is the first in Wender\'s road movies that he made his name on. The story is life itself- the kinds of things that really happen when you are on an adventure. A photo-journalist suddenly finds himself stuck with a little girl and he has no idea what happened to the mother. Together they go traveling through the East coast of America, and then back to Europe. If I remember right they even pass through Amsterdam! This is cinema that is fresh, connected to life itself and not filtered through the so-called brains of a thousand businessmen before it hits the screen! For my vote this is the best film Wenders ever made..... + A wonderful 25 minute interview with Wim Wenders over the making of the film. SUNDAY OCTOBER 19th CINEMA DERIVE OVERTOOM 301 20:30

screening: FANTASTIC PLANET (20 oktober)

MONDAY OCTOBER 20th FANTASTIC PLANET ( La Planète sauvage) 1973 Directed by Rene Laloux 72 minutes In French with English subtitles This mesmerizing psychedelic sci-fi classic is spellbinding. The Terry Gilliam/Monty Python-esque animation is totally stunning. Imagine a very SOUTH PARK type of animation, using simple cut-out paper images which are \"animated\". But the effect in this film is much more haunting....and it becomes clear that this so-called primitive style of animation actually reveals a kind of beauty or poetry that is extremely rare these days with computer generated movement. In fact, this film took a pain-staking 5 years to complete in a French collaboration with a Czechoslovakian animation studio. FANTASTIC PLANET tells the story of human-like creatures who are kept as domestic pets by an alien race of blue giants called \"Draags\". Is this out planet or another? Is it set in the past or the future? Everything about this film is left open to the imagination and interpretation. The biggest quality of the film is that it is profoundly disorienting....much like David Lynch\'s ERASERHEAD it keeps us suspended in an overall feeling of other-worldliness. I have heard of people doing extremely strange things after watching this film...and I have heard of people who have been haunted by it, dreaming about its strangeness for years after they had seen it. It transports the viewer into a world that is a bit like entering a Hieronymous Bosch painting. It also has a trippy 70s soundtrack by Alain Goraguer who had also composed music for Serge Gainsbourg. This cult-classic, created along with surrealist illustrator Roland Topor, still remains a landmark of European animation. Fantastic Planet won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1973. CINEMANITA @ De Nieuwe Anita Frederik Hendrikstraat 111 (Hugo de Grootplein) Doors open at 19:30 Film starts at 20:30 sharp
